I recently completed building a Lyman Great Plains Rifle kit for an article in “American Frontiersman” magazine on guns used in mountain man movies. I thought it would be more fun to build the gun, rather than buying a completed model.

The difficulty level for putting this kit together is pretty low. Anyone, with enough patience, and a few tools, can do a good job on it. So it is a great first project build to use to learn the basics of wood and metal finishing.

But easy as it is, it still takes some knowledge to pull off a good job. Unfortunately Lyman provides absolutely no directions or educational material with the kit.

So, to help out first timers, I’ve put together a short video series that takes you completely through the build.

The videos on this YouTube Playlist will take a prospective builder from un-boxing, right through final assembly of the completed rifle.

I hope someone finds it helpful.

I have enjoyed your videos very much and have learned quite a lot from you. Video # 7 is the last one I have watched in this series and see that you have done a great job on the build. I have a .54 cal. GPR that I bought as a finished model in 1998. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I have mine. The articles you write are among my favorites. Keep up the good work.

LOVE it!! Sorry to hear about your rod. A lot of those Italian guns don't come with the best rods.

I tried to do a Lyman GPR kit one time in my studio apartment on a rickety plastic picnic table set up in my kitchen and basically no initial tools whatsoever. I'll admit that I was under prepared. Sold the kit and made back almost all my money on it. I still have yet to pick up a black powder rifle. I'm leaning to the Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken with a maple stock as they are so beautiful. The whole reason I decided to do a kit of the GPR was so I could finish it out to where it looked nicer than the rather plain factory made GPRs.

Mike your GPR looks like the one I had envisioned in my head. I'm not blessed with such skill so will probably have to get a Pedersoli!! :)

Super job on the Lyman Great Plains Rifle! Looks very authentic and love the wood furniture and the browned metal finish.

GREAT job Mike
Your videos are always great
I have purchased guns due to your videos
I must have watched them all and some of them more than once
Always informative....keep up
