M-1 Carbine

I'm contemplating the purchase of a CMP M-1 carbine. The possiblities are the following:

1) Buy an Inland now for $495
2) Buy an Underwood sometime after September for $565

Is it worth the wait for an Underwood? And are they inherently worth $70 more than an Inland and if so why--numbers produced?

I bought an Inland (not from CMP) and really like it. Fun little carbine.

My input would be that if you are looking for a shooter and/or and expample of the type (my motivation), save the $70 and spend it on ammo. If you are also looking for collectibility, hold out for the Underwood. I spent the difference on mine getting an excellent condition USGI stock (from Numrich) to replace the rotted piece of driftwood that was on mine originally.

Yes, Inlands are generally less expensive because of the numbers produced.

Get whatever you want when you can afford it. These carbines are mix masters and will have little "collector" value. That's not to say they won't appreciate in value (they most likely will), but, IIRC, only the receiver on these carbines was made by the named company. Bolts, barrels, wood, etc can and most likely will be from another company.

That being said, I just blew my dough on a Garand. I'm saving towards a carbine now... it'd be nice to get an IBM, National Postal, or Rockola. Why? I just think it would be cool to have a gun made by a typewriter, postage machine, or jukebox company.

strat81, I did the same thing--got my garand first and am now looking to get a carbine. I also thought the same thing about manufacturers, especially Rockola!
