Instead of changing an old M14 (sorry) I recommend a brand new one from one of these companies out there which make .308 in AR 15 style.

:barf: No thanks. I tried an ArmaLite AR-10A4 and sold it to fund another M14 build.

I have a new lightweight synthetic polymer E2 stock on the way.
It is a drop in stock (no bedding) and it will accept rails if needed.

The more I look at the Troy the more I like it. But why ditch a good design and switch to AR-10 pattern rifle? M14 has been reliable when taken care of, and much easily than AR-10.

Also, I personally have a M14 at hand, but for, say, Armalite AR-10A4 would cost me around 2500-3000 bucks, yet the M14 with Troy SASS stock would cost me around 1/3 of it. That's a lot, and eventually the rifles would be with similar accuracy with M14 having a tad longer barrel (22 vs 18 inch). To each his own, I like M14 and would like to keep it on the edge of modern technology.

Looking at those stocks it looks more and more like an AR.

Can someone explain the differences between an AR10 and M14? As in, why would you prefer one over the other? And try to be objective please.

Would a $3000 custom AR10 perform any worse in battle conditions than an M14 of the same price? Why does the military use the M14 over the AR10?

The AR type has tight tolerances that make it accurate, but not so reliable in battle conditions.
The M14 is an old school main battle rifle (MBR) made to perform in all battle conditions.
I like the AR type, but no matter how you dress it up or what caliber you chamber it for it will never be a main battle rifle.

Guntech I like it. I've got parts in the mail for a similar thing, except it's the original Norc posted and I'm slapping and airsoft rail on it, with KAC mounting hardware. But it's because I didn't know your type of railed cover existed. What is it? I've got the 3-rail one, and like the lines of yours a little better.

Plus mine has the mystery-wood Chinese stock.

And what do you do for a cleaning kit? Can you still fit the cleaning tool in there, but just not the metal rod assembly? I'd like the idea of just relying on something like a boresnake, but sometimes you need a solid rod to get stuck cases out.

There's a reason for that. By mimicing the AR15 sight line, the platform can now use AR15 height optics. Optics in general will be highly usable without chicken necking, cheek rests, etc. Most of these platforms also allow use of AR15 furniture as well.

Yes, the LAW483 M14 MCS from TROY creates a flat top M14 that uses just about all available AR15/M16/M4 accessories...
it also allows the recoil to push straight back just like an AR type rifle - this reduces muzzle flip.
