For those with M-44 Mosin Nagants...what surplus ammo have you found to be the most accurate out of your M-44? And, was your aim better with the baynet extended or closed. Please be specific about the ammo...country, year of manufacture, steel or brass case, lead or steel core bullet, and weight.

Thanks

In my 1954 Vintage Romanian M-44 I have found that the mid-80's Czech "Silvertip" works well. The Albanian 88-89 vintage was poor stuff.

Bayo folded vs extended does make a 3"-4" shift in POI.

My M44 shoots the same POI with the bayo in or out. I was using albanian 1987 production, I think, steel core light ball. I only got a chance to shoot a few rounds at 75 yds, because it was about 10 degrees out, they were all about in a 4" group. I am pretty sure my groups would have been alot better under better shooting conditions, It would have helped if I could feel my fingers when shooting.
Next time I shoot, I will report back with more reliable info. on exactly how accurate My albanian is, and maybe I will buy some heavy ball, and see if my gun preffers that.

Went out and shot again yesterday, It was 22 degrees with the same albanian ammo, The BEST group I got at 100 yds was about an inch, I was really impressed, but It hit about 1 ft to the right and 2 more feet down:fire: , The bayonett didn't make a difference, I plan on buying some heavy ball to see If it will hit where I aim at.

Mosins are fickle. What amm one loves, the next hates.

The most consistanly accurate for me have been the 148-gr Czech silvertip and the 180-gr Hungarian LEAD CORE heavy ball. the Hungarian steel core heavy ball has not been as consistant.

Some of my Mosins are real tack drivers with Albanian ammo, most shoot good with the Chinese ammo I have, but not as good as the Czech or Hungarian ammo.

I hear tell the Polish ammo is good, but it dried up before I could get any, and people are asking crazy prices for it now.

As for the bayonet, it usually won't affect group size, but sometimes will shif tthe point of impact. But ti's a harmonics issue and each rifle is different. With some gun/ammo combinations, it makes no difference, with others it moves the point of impact a couple feet at 100 meters.

It all depends on what your rifle likes.

my POI definatly changed when i extended they bayo. someone either here or on castboolit suggested it. i wouldn't say it shot better groups, but much closer to poa.

i like czech light ball, but thats cause it was cheap and shoots 'well enough'

i haven't experimented much.
