I have always been curious as to why the cleaning rod on my Russsian M-44 was only about 3/4 the length of the barrel, rendering it useless.

Thoughts from the Mosin-Nagant camp?

I've never used mine to clean my Russian M44, but I suppose one could clean what was missed from the muzzle end by removing the bolt completely and cleaning from that direction as well.

I have personally never seen the one on the M44 but most Mauser rods are also way to short. The reason is because they expected soldiers to budy up, screw two of them together and use it that way. Not very fun if you are alone though. Perhaps the Russians had the same thought. Or maybe they didnt think that anyone would actually ever clean their rifle, or live long enough to need it?

I think Lochaber has it. It's the same principal they used for much of their equipment, from shelter halves to mess kits. Or one soldier with the rifle and another with the ammo :D
