Another smith I work with has mentioned bringing me a 94 30-30 to pull the barrel on. As I have not seen the rifle, I can only assume its age as being fairly recent but not Japanese.
Question. Another smith in town told him he could not pull the barrel since that vintage rifle has a pressed in barrel, not threaded. This is news to me but I don't do a lot with 94's around here. What's the story? Pressed in or screwed and Locktited?
Help me rc, I need your expertise.

No, never ever did a 94 Winchester have a pressed in barrel.

Screwed it is.
And not Lock-tighted either!

Caution, caution on pulling. Be SURE you have adequate support for the receiver when you apply any torque. Some of those older 94's are very tightly fitted and it's not all that difficult to warp a receiver. Probably the best way to use a support insert in the receiver opening and turn the bbl rather than the reverse.........little heat wouldn't hurt either.

If the barrel is new and short chambered, you should have no problem (except those mentioned already.) If it is a take-off barrel, the rifle could end up with excess headspace and the 94 is not the easiest rifle to set the barrel back because the magazine also has to be modified.

Thanks for all of the input. I have already been thinking about supporting the delicate receiver during the process.
The customer is an engraver who wants to work on the receiver without the barrel in the way so it will be a direct take off and reinstall.

I can understand the engraver wanting to get the barrel out of the way, but I suspect he could work around it OK if he has to, and IMHO, it is not worth taking a chance on damaging the gun for what is basically convenience.

The engraver decided to work around the barrel and do a minimal amount of engraving to boot. He discovered that the 94 in question was of the "mystery metal" era so could not be touched up afterwards.
