I've got a more or less plain jane Smith M&P 10 rifle in factory form. 18" with the big factory flash hider. I am thinking about dressing it up a bit, without adding weight.
What would be some things you would suggest adding or changing? What parts would you put on your M&P 10?

I thought about that. I think 12"-15" would be handy for the handguard. I think Midwest Industries makes one that would work...
Who do you like for a charging handle?

I like Midwest Industries' handguards. I've had a few.

For charging handles, I like the BCM Gunfighter with the medium profile. It's bigger, but not too big. The large would be good for a bench gun though. I don't know if they make an AR10 pattern handle though.

I made the following changes to my MP10-
- Replaced the over sized gas block
- Replaced the over sized muzzle device
- Installed a Lancer low DPMS carbon fiber rifle length free float tube
- Installed an SSA trigger
- Installed a Magpul buttstock with a thick recoil pad
- Installed a Magpul grip

The MP10 wil short stroke with mil spec ammo. Use commercial 308 ammo.

The gas key hits the lower where the receiver extension screws in hard enough to damage it. I suspect this happens because the buffer is too light, the spring rate is too low and the plastic buffer tip too soft and compresses too much.

It's not due to the rifle being over gassed. I've tried an adjustable gas block, but unless I run it full open, the rifle short strokes, even with commercial 308 ammo.

Mine also needs a new extractor spring.

Sorting out the remaining problems has been put on hold due to time constraints and ammo shortages.

Reports indicate the MP10 gets good accuracy with the plastic tipped Hornady 168 grain ammo.

Depends on what you like and want as far as function. To me an ideal AR10 would be:
-A2 stock
-Full float Midwest or Aero rail (talked about below)
-Magpul MOE+ grip
-Silencerco ASR flash hider muzzle device
-Nice trigger be it LaRue MBT (my choice) or others
-A nice LPVO on top
-Double point sling from Blue Force Gear "Vickers"
-A bunch of 20 rounders

And call it a day. But your desires are more than likely different.

I like Midwest rails, I own several for AR15 patterned guns. I also more recently have become a big fan of Aero Precision rails. I don't like a full picatinny on the top, both the rails below have the picatinny at the back and front of the top but not in the middle, much nicer to handle, and the mid area picatinny was wasted on me. It looks like Midwest doesn't have an option like the one linked to below for the AR10 pattern, but the Aero linked below is for an AR10 pattern. I believe that your M&P is LR308 or aka "DPMS" patterned and not Armalite "AR10" patterned, but you should check to be sure.

The Midwest Rail I like is: https://www.midwestindustriesinc.com/MI-ULW15-p/mi-ulw15.htm

The Aero rail I like is: https://www.aeroprecisionusa.com/m5-atlas-s-one-m-lok-handguard
