I've been considering the purchase of a new, Smith & Wesson M&P pistol for a while now.
I decided to check around with some major suppliers and gunbroker to see what their mag
prices are doing. Many places are out-of-stock; more so than I would have imagined.

Anybody know what's up?

I agree, but I'll add that it seems the factory may be backed up on mag orders: Midway isn't expecting M&P 40 mags in until mid-March and Bodyguard 380 mags just got bumped from expected today to expected some time in May.

Obama and Tucson is what's up.

Pretty much this. The M&P series a bit newer on the market than many other models of gun. As such there are less magazines out there already in the retail channel, and fewer aftermarket options available. That makes them rarer, and in a time when there's a bit of a run on hi-cap mags in general that translates to backorders.

Though I hate to contribute to the rush, I'd suggest that if you don't like a possible 10-round limit, buy your mags soon. The whole mess might blow over without any changes, but it might not. Either way though at worst you're looking at having a few extra mags on hand.

Personally, I've already bought an extra hi-cap for my P95, 2 more for my AR15, 2 for a Glock 19 (which I don't even own but figured it was a likely future purchase :)), and when I ordered my CZ-75 I put in for 5 magazines with it. Can't hurt to have extras.

Either way though it's going to bite if they pass the legislation. There's a whole school of thought that can revolve around designing a gun of as high a capacity as is possible in a duty size pistol yet retaining respectable power. That entire area of development is likely to see less interest with the passing of such laws.

Particularly worrying are the versions of the possible bills which completely ban even transfer of existing mags. In those cases, weapons that are out of production that only came with > 10 round mags become essentially non-transferrable paperweight without aftermarket mag support (which may be non-feasible economically, or even if feasible, may yield mags of sub-standard quality vs oem).

Overall, just bad, bad, bad all around.

Agreed all around: I own the M&P 40 so I need some backup mags for that, but I just grabbed 5 full-cap 4006 mags because I know I want one, and I'm going to order 5 Beretta 92 mags and 10 30-round AR mags the next time my wife isn't looking for the same reason. I can't tell if they have a chance with this, but it can't hurt to prepare like they do.

Another question is, "How many mags are enough?"

For a "serious" gun, 12 is good, 24 is better.

They are still filling magazine rebates, that's pretty much it. I find that local gunshops do a better job of keeping them in stock than websites.

I wish mec gar would start offering some.

The M&P mags are made in Italy by either Mec-Gar or ACT (not even sure if those are different companies). I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't available direct from those companies because of contractual restrictions in their supply agreement with S&W.

I've owned an M&P9 for roughly 3 years now and mags have been out of stock most of that time. Not all - I have bought two or three aftermarket - but most of the time, out of stock. I believe it's a simple matter of demand exceeding production capacity. The S&W M&P is not only popular with civilians but is getting US and foreign law enforcement contracts all over the place.

Glock mags cost about 60% as much right now. Just saying.

They just had a magazine rebate deal with new pistols and they are still short on stock from that rebate promo. I'm sure they will be back in stock soon unless Tucson causes a rush on magazines (it shouldn't with a heavily Republican House).

yup.

Wouldn't even remotely interest me in looking at a Glock.

S&W/ its supplier will get caught up, overshoot and glut. Time line, my guess 6 months.

Just put your orders in to your favorite vendor in a couple of places, wait and hope the ZA doesn't transpire until after the magazines arrive. ;)

FYI for anyone who doesn't know, the "two free mags by mail" rebate offer has been offered 2-3 times a year every year since this pistol was introduced, so it's not like some new one-time thing that caused an unforeseen shortage. For some reason S&W's suppliers can't make enough mags. Yet mags from Mec-Gar and ACT for almost any other popular pistol are readily available and rarely out of stock.

On a more positive note, MidwayUSA has a variety of the M&P mags on sale this month for $29.99. Midway is very good about backorders, so even if they're out of stock you can be confident in getting the mag at the sale price within a few (?) months.

Update on this topic: Midway is still backordered and I hadn't been able to find M&P 40 mags anywhere else, so I tried GB and found a seller with them new for $29.99 + $6 shipping. Just got mine in the mail today: NIB and as advertised, quick USPS shipping in a priority box, no problems. For those who may be interested the seller is Code 4, auctions @ http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/SellerAuctions.aspx?User=127851.

I am sure that since the mag pul dudes started making vids and using m&p's all their fan boys jumped on the wagon and bought them all up. On a serious note there are alot of folks not only in the training community that have made the switch to the m&p's. They are more popular now than they were, and I am sure that S&W is having a rough time keeping up with demand.
