I am a very big fan of the earlier S&W models 3913,3914,CS9 and 5906.I have to say I finally ordered two 9mm M&P shield model one for me one for the grandson. From my research they look to be a quality pistol for the price but time will tell.:)

I'm also a big fan of the 39xx-series. I own or have owned 4 different 3953's (2 standard models; a PC "CCO" (my term, not theirs) and a TSW; also a standard 3913 and 3913LS models and even a CS9. (I no longer own all of them.) The single-stack 9mm 3rd generation S+W autos are excellent, excellent guns for carry and the range. I've focused on them because I wanted to carry what I shoot with the most and I've often said they were the perfect balance: small, light and thin enough for use as a great carry gun while still being "big and heavy enough" for tons of fun on the range.

My Shield is only my second "modern polymer" pistol after my M+P9c. I think time will obviously tell on the Shield long-term, although most reports are extremely positive. My own experience with it is also extremely positive. Some would say the Shield is the modern day alternative to the 3913. I'm leaning that way. I'll be hanging on to most or all of my 3rd gens, but the Shield is getting a lot of range time and just about all my carry time.

Being a recently introduced gun, Frank is right --- time will tell. They seem to be solidly built and neither of mine has had a single problem yet. Apparently there were some early issues with barrel throating but were quickly remedied. S&W is going to stand behind them and will no doubt correct any future issues, but I don't forsee any right now. They're selling faster than ice in the Sahara and there must be a reason.

I have two shields now.

I bought one and spent the next 2.5 months looking for another one. Finally scored in Houston.

Jfrey, I bought mine at Carter's Country on the Katy Freeway in Houston (just a couple of exits past ikea). That was two weeks ago, however. But, there are like four locations in Houston...

Shipwreck, that's where my wife found my first one in the store on SW Freeway. She called them at 3:00 pm on a Thursday and they unexpectedly got one in on the truck that day. My wife can find stuff when no one else can. She had called Carroll's in Wharton the same day and two weeks later they called and I got my second one.

Just FYI, Gander Mtn. in Stafford is supposed to be getting in a gun shipment on the 1st. They said you can call and ask for Joe on the 2nd. to see if any came in.
