I'm thinking about getting an M&P sub compact 9mm with the safety option for the Mrs.
Anybody have one? Thoughts?

I have that. For about 1.5 yrs now.

About 1000 rounds thru it with zero failures of any kind.

I think take down and cleaning is easy and straight foward.

Have shot UMC, WWB, American Eagle, Winchester R9AT's and something else too I cant remember in three different weight flavors of 115, 124, 147 gr

Mine does not have a mag disconnect from the factory; dont know if they make it both ways.

Personally I think the thumb safety is a little on the large size. I have two spares I'm playing with reshaping to find what I like best but currently use the factory thumb safety... go figure.

I also think it could be a little more positive/heavier. It use to sometimes disengage in my cheapie Uncle Mikes IWB but now that its broken in a little it doesnt self disengage anymore.

I have links on how to remove and/or modify the thumb safety to be more positive that I could share if you'd like. By time I dug up the info I lost interest in actully doing it because I dont think its needed.

I think its still a little bulky for IWB but its right about the same size as all the others.

I have shorter fingers so trigger reach is critical to me. I found it to be a shorter trigger reach than the G26, Bersa 9UC, HK P2000SK with LEM and Ruger SR9c. The trigger dingle on the G26 and Ruger seem to be a distraction/in the way; shorter fingers probably magnafies this.

My favorite is my BHP and thats what I'm comparing it to... to give you an idea. And I prefered to stick with a thumb safety to keep things similar.

All in all... I'm happy with it. One of the few guns for me that has been 100% out of the box even with out cleaning it before the 1st session.

I have that too. I have it because I, like you, planned on giving it to the Mrs. She had been out shooting once before with my .22lr and my father's .357. He had her empty the cylinder double action into the 7yd target and she was excited about getting hits. I knew she was ready for her own.

Fast forward a few weeks and I spot a used 9c (sans safety). I know what to expect as I already own the M&P 40. I bought it, she tried it and promptly set it down after 3 rounds declaring she didn't like it. (she also had trouble with the stiff recoil spring) Said it felt like it was going to fly out of her hands. Thus, I was the proud new owner of a compact 9mm.

Two weeks after that, her M&P 9L came in and she was much happier. Easier for her to hold and manipulate. It's also more accurate than she is so there's early gratification and room to improve.

Do both of you a favor and get to a rental range. Women are a picky species. The M&Ps have all been absolutely reliable for us but I realize after reading many posts that if the shoe doesn't fit it won't be worn and some people need velcro straps until they learn how to tie. Letting her choose (hopefully with preselected reliable candidates) her own pistol gives her a vested interest in shooting it because she will refuse to be wrong in her choice whereas your choice can be scrutinized.

Good luck and tread lightly.

I have 2 one in 9mm and one in .40 S&W. Both are good guns.

I made my primary CCW (the .40c) better by adding a set of the Truglo TFO night sights and a CT laser. One of the best mods was installing the Apex hardened sear and stricker block kit. The trigger is no longer stiff and gritty. It's smooth as silk and breaks like a fine piece of glass. I'm considering doing the same to the 9mm. It's an easy upgrade that doesn't reqiure a gunsmith to install.

I think the question is not fully answered unless all points are addressed:

1. IT'S FOR HIS WIFE!
2. IT'S FOR HIS WIFE!
3. HE'S ASKING ABOUT PICKING A GUN FOR...HIS WIFE!
4. Is it a good/reliable pistol?

Many are the posters here who share my shame at not including her in the process only to be saddled with an unwanted pistol. I was fortunate enough to have bought one that I really liked AND that my state changed its cwp law to SHALL ISSUE.

It's an extremely reliable series of pistols, mine have been 100% as well but again, that doesn't factor in with some women (or men for that matter). My wife didn't choose my truck or my Jeep or my pistol. Would you want your wife choosing your next ____?

Thanks for the info, folks. Good input. My wife likes shooting Glocks, but prefers to have the option of a manual safety at times, though when she carries concealed, she'll do so with the safety off.

She carries a S&W 442 hammerless now, but is looking to have more capacity.

Good call on the range rental. I'll do that.
