Ok I'm wanting to buy either a SW M&P .22 or a Sig Model 522 .22 for plinking and maybe some squirrel hunting, and just wanted to get you guys opinion on these two firearms.

Both seem to be great rifles. If you have either's centerfire big brother, that would be the one for you.

Quick note on the M&P, they are ammo sensitive, check the owner's manual for recommendations. I have one and it's at about 2k (+) with CCI, no issues.

Sig 522 is not ammo finicky as far my experience goes. I've had 2, both with roughly 1500 rounds each, and neither has ever experienced any kind of failure at all, ammo related or rifle related. I actually expected a few based solely on the caliber but no, none what so ever. It's an absolute joy to shoot and I'd buy another again in a heartbeat.

I would definitely get the SiG. I have seen THREE M&P .22s spit out their extractor. That is in fact the only 3 I have ever come in contact with. My buddy's did it to him multiple times. Of course it is under warranty, but considering the price point, why not just get a SiG that is by all accounts reliable and non ammo picky?

Another vote for the SIG 522. It uses the same "standard" AR22 mags as the Ceiner/CMMG conversion kits and dedicated uppers in case someday you want your real AR trigger on your .22LR AR

Thanks for all the info guys. Yall have sold me, that and the price tag on the sig being $50 lower.

Also, do you guys have any recommendations on what optic I should use with it?

I have no experience with the M&P but a guy did have his 522 at the range the other day and that thing was very, very accurate. The guy who owned it stapled his earplugs to the target and started shooting the dangling plugs over and over. He then tells me he is going to try to shoot the string. Two shot later both earplugs are on the ground. That is a lot better shooting than what I could do with the 4x scope he was using and its WAY better than I thought the 522 could do.

Yes, Primary Arms M3 multi reticle, $99, has 4 reticles, for close up. Primary Arms 4x compact with illuminated reticle which apparently should be available first half of December for a little extra distance.

Thanks Glocked-and-Loaded,

I looked up some other reviews on primary arms, mostly because I had never heard of them, and a lot of people recommend them.

And thanks everyone for the help, and the one - sided votes for the sig. I'll post some pictures of it once I've gotten it and the scope.

BTW. I really liked the stock on the 522. It was really comfortable and sturdy. After shooting one I'm really tempted to get one too.

I too find it very comfortable. The placement of it allows red dot scopes to be mounted lower than a typical AR, it comes with an extended pad for longer LOP, and it just tucks very nicely.
