M&P vs XD

You guys are really making a case for the M&P...too bad the price (at least at Buds) has gone up recently. They used to be $439 inc. shipping a few weeks ago when the promotions for the 2 free mags and range bag were being offered...that was a great deal and I'm regretful that I passed it up, but that was during the time that people were posting reports of rust and mags dropping. Hopefully those issues have now been addressed, but the price seems to have jumped up by roughly $50 on most models. :(

I agree that the M&P's ergonomics are on top, bar none, and I really did like the simplicity of the M&P's design. But I believe they have totally missed the mark in the design of their mag catch. This is the M&P's weak point in reliability, and let me tell you, it's a nasty one to have. Take a look at people's reports at the M&P forum and by their latest poll, 22% of respondents say that they have experienced the mag drop problem. That's a 1 in 5 chance that you will have it too. And the worst part is, many don't experience the problem until they've put hundreds of rounds through the gun. That's exactly what you don't want in a pistol you're trusting your life with.
I shoot with a few LEOs who have been assigned the M&P (.40) as duty weapons. One of the guys is on his third one in less than a year due to the mag drop issue. It is a real issue.

I have shot my share of Glocks, and I've run a few hundred rounds through borrowed M&Ps (both stock and "worked"), but I still don't own either. I do currently own four XDs, though... I have owned seven XDs in total, and I don't see myself giving them up any time soon. My customized for IDPA XD-9 Tactical has even converted a few Glock and M&P guys. :D

Once the M&P has been out for a while longer and the magazine drop issue is taken care of, I might consider one just so I can shoot SSP. ;)

(model4006)i own the m&p in 40 and love it. have held and fired an xd in 40, its a great gun but its no m&p. blocky, clunky and less accurate with me shooting it.

every thing is less accurate when your shooting it!!:neener:

Only thing the XD has going for it is
1) The grip safety. Some people don't care/like them but some do. My wife's first gun was XD9. While she likes to shoot my M&P 9c she doesn't like the fact that it doesn't have the grip safety. So if you want a grip safety I think the XD comes out on top.

2) Right now there is more 3rd party support for accessories & holsters for the XD than the M&P. There are substantially fewer M&P holster styles and even fewer M&P compact styles. This will change as S&W sells couple million M&P over next 4-5 years.

Other than that IMHO I think the M&P is superior to the XD in every way. I have owned both (fullsize & compact) and shot couple thousand rounds through the each. I enjoy shooting the M&P more, and I now exclusively carry the M&P 9c.

Anyone compare the XD-M to M&P. I am wondering how the improved ergo stacks up to the M&P.

Like 'em both, own 'em both, shoot 'em both. As long as it fits your hand and you shoot it well, and above all, is reliable, go for it.

The problem about assigning the merits and dislikes of particular pistols is that they are just that per individual: anecdotal and specific to the pistol that person owns and shoots. Now listing up documented detriments, that might be worth somethig over a series of production runs...but still won't tell you about the specific gun you eventually buy.

As stated above, the best thing you can do is go rent and try 'em yourself. Don't exclude Glock or any other guns in your purchasing budget. Handle buddies' guns and see what you think.

Good luck.
