After several years (hey, I was working on my sniper book), I finally installed my UltiMak mount onto the barrel. It required some inletting into the stock. No big deal though.
One observation, the UlitMak does not have a lip/groove cut into the rear portion of it so there's nothing to slip into the tongue that is cut into the receiver for the wood hand-guard. Furthermore, there's no corresponding grove for the stock band to slip over either. If the UltiMak is secured to the barrel, it won't move and who wants a moving sight with a moving point-of-impact?
On my own carbine (Israeli IAI copy), there's play between the barrel and the stock - a result of poor inletting or ill formed stock? As a side note, the brich wood stock was really dry. I applied some Watco Oil and it sucked it right up.
Now, the issue of sights. I might buy a red dot (which I prefer) but might go with a long eye relief scope (which I have somewhere). I'll probably try the glass since I won't have to spend money. If it doesn't shift around, then it would be worth putting money into a red dot sight.
