I got an extremely cheap used m1 carbine. He said there was some things wrong with it, but it was just to good a deal to pass up. I shot it today, and the bolt would not even unlock, I shot a few more rounds with it using it like a bolt action. I dont know what the problem could be, this is my firdt rifle, I only have shotguns besides this. On my remington 1100 the gas ports are small and open, on this it looks like its big and almost looks like its capped off. Is this the way it should be? Any help is appreciated, help me get my gun to work!:):)

Bring up this schematic:

http://www.e-gunparts.com/schemzoom.asp?schem=2070zM1 CARBINE

The M1 Carbine action works by a gas piston (#20 in the schematic) held in place by a Gas Piston Nut (#19). Most likely this is not operational. It could be rusted in place or damaged. Try soaking it with a good penetrating oil like Kroil for a few days to see if that loosens it up. If not, you will need to take it apart and that requires a Piston Wrench available from Numrich http://www.e-gunparts.com. You might as well order a new Gas Piston and Gas Piston Nut and replace them. Make sure the gas port from the barrel to the piston is clear and that should solve your problem.

Thanks, I am bidding on the tool on ebay. If I do not win it, I will buy from there and get a new piston.
