I was browsing around gunbroker and decided my next rifle purchase should be a Garand or M1 carbine (Both of my grandfathers carried them so it'd be nice to own a piece of history relevant to them). I like the Garand and all but the Carbine just strikes me as a gun I'd really like to have. Being aware of the fact that my state (New Jersey) is very gun unfriendly, I checked our prohibited firearms list and sure enough "M1 Carbine Type" is not allowed.
Being a bit disparaged but knowing the loopholes I looked around and talked to a few people and they said that the Auto Ordnance M1s are legal in NJ as long as you use the 15rd mags and no paratrooper stocks. I keep checking the statutes site and it doesn't list an exemption like it does for the Colt Match AR and the Springfield Armory M1A. I also found a conversation http://njgunforums.com/forum/index.php?/topic/17709-nj-legal-m1-carbine/page__p__232224__hl__carbine__fromsearch__1#entry232224
that states that a letter was released making Auto-Ordnance Carbines legal in NJ however no more data was provided and it hasn't been updated for over a year.
I'm really interested in knowing if I can legally own any type of M1 carbine in NJ at all or if I can only stick to the M1 Garand. Any legal information would be wonderful. If an FFL from NJ can confirm that the letter is legit that'd be great as well.
Cheers, Hank
