M1 Doubling

I reported in this forum earlier on a problem I was experiencing with my CMP M1 Garand. The rifle occasionally fired double. I replaced the trigger sear group but continued to have the problem.

When I run a function check with the trigger group removed, the trigger group functions normally - i.e. with trigger held down, the sear engages the hammer hooks when the hammer is cocked rearward, then transfers to forward hooks when trigger is released. Trigger group also functions normally when installed in stock (new CMP stock) without barrel and receiver. The rifle fails the function check when everything is assembled, however. This leads me to believe that the problem is still present.

Any ideas as to what is wrong and how to correct? Thanks in advance.

Have the hammer hooks been cut down? If the hammer hooks have been cut down to improve the trigger pull and cut too far, it will cause the gun to double. A replacement hammer is the only solution.

Call the CMP and they'll send you a Fedex label to send it back for free. They'll fix it for free and return it to you for free.

They did this for me when my service grade HRA doubled. Hasn't since.

The problem is likely the relationship between the trigger pad and the stock.

1K - Sounds like the best idea. Hate to part with it, the old girl looks real nice now with her new furniture. This is probably the best time of year. I will call them on Monday.

I felt the same when I sent mine back. But they did it quickly. The stock they left alone... I did get back a stamped trigger guard in place of the milled one that was first on it (which I prefer, only for looks) but it works perfectly now so I can't complain. And IIRC HRAs were originally built with stamped guards so I suppose it's a bit more "correct". Not that I care about that in a shooter.

Gotta love the CMP! Called today and spoke with an armorer. They're sending the Fedex label to return the rifle for free repair. He apologized that it might take a little longer due to holiday season ("...not as much as 2 or 3 weeks..."). What a fantastic program!

The CMP has always been a good program. I suppose it's an example of how good people interested in doing a good job can succeed inspite of being under the governments thumb. Wish we had more like those people in the vastly bloated bureauracies.

Just thought I'd follow up with the "rest of the story" (to quote the late great Paul Harvey). Received my repaired Garand from the CMP today. Functions just as it should. I believe the replacement of the trigger group did the trick. As an added bonus, the stamped trigger housing was replaced with a forged housing, and the shiny worn gas tube was replaced with one that was black.

You got it fixed but not on the trigger assembly you was having trouble with. Your problem as someone mention was probably hammer hooks either worked on or worn. The reason they worked out of gun and in stock without action was because when assembled the bolt was bearing down on on hammer causing handoff to be out of time or hammer hook was negative and sliding and releasing slow enough that it doubled instead of just following bolt down. It was probably seldom enough that it didn't happen every time or you would have a 9lb rock-and-roll 30-06 which is something to be avoided at all costs.
