Recently my M1 Garand has "doubled" on a couple of occasions. At first I thought it was due to milking the trigger resulting in a bump fire. Now I believe it is a mechanical problem. When I function check the weapon by squeezing and holding the trigger, cycling the action then releasing and resqueezing the trigger, the hammer doesn't snap.

Would replacing the hammer and trigger/sear correct this problem? Any other thoughts as to what might be causing the double firing?

Thanks,

Kevin

sounds like the hammer is following due to the hammer hooks not engaging
primary or secondary sear. Pull your fire control group out and manually cock the hammer and see if the sear is engaging. slowly pull the trigger and watch for the secondary sear to pass the hooks to the primary sear before dropping the hammer. the secondary sear is at the top of the trigger, it disengages and passes of to the primary sear(about halfway down from the secondary) this engages on the back set of hammer hooks. checl the hooks for wear and the sear for wear.

Thanks for the replies. It appears that the primary sear is worn and not engaging the rear hammer hook. Is it worth it to just replace the sear, or should I replace the whole trigger/sear assembly?

Thanks

P.S. I will not fire until this is fixed. Probably lucky I haven't ripped off an entire clip at the public range where I shoot. --- esp. since I volunteer as range officer there.

Its easiest to replace the entire trigger/sear.
That's how they were usually supplied.

Thanks for the help. Trigger/Sear is on order from Fulton Armory.

In my case, the thing fired full auto. Replacing the hammer solved the problem.

Tom:

post carefully. BATFE have been known to prosecute owners of malfunctioning semi-autos which went full auto who had no apparent criminal intent. Pathetic.
