Was just over on gunboards and saw a thread that Century has imported 10,000 M1 Garands and M1 carbines from South Korea. Take it for what it's worth, but I sure could go for a carbine at a decent price.

Unless things have changed recently, no U.S. military weapons can be reimported back into the country. (The only exception are lend-lease guns that come back through the CMP).
Century will have to cut the receivers and import the parts as "parts kits." That's were all those Danish reimport Garand parts kits came a few years ago.
Btw, don't except much from ex-Korean guns, even if they do come in as complete guns. The last batch of Korean re-imports came from "Blue Sky" in the 80's and the majority were very rough. The Korean guns saw a lot of use and weren't maintained as well as the Danish guns.

Hmmm...an M1 Carbine would definately be in my future if they were in reasonable shape and reasonably priced.
I also believe that no semi auto military guns are allowed to be imported (Clinton did it).
Sure would be sweet if the market got flooded.
It would be a shame to chop up perfectly good guns but I suppose a boatload (literally)of GI parts would not be so horrible to take.

On which forum did you see the rumors of the Korean Garands?
If true, will these be commercial sales? Would CMP have any knowledge as the whether the rumor is valid or not?

Some months back Orest Michaels admitted that the CMP had inspected the M1's still in Korea and had passed on any deal to bring them back to the Army, hence to CMP.
He stated that condition of the M1's remaining in Korea was well below what could be considered "Rack" grade. Barely even "Parts Grade" quality. In addition, the Koreans were demanding prices way in excess of current value.
I don't know one way or another who or how may now be importing these back here or if they got the Koreans to lower the asking price......
Given the CMP's response to these rifles I'd be very wary of buying any of them as a shooter, especially sight unseen. I'd only buy one (sight unseen) at "parts kit" prices, no higher.

Okay, this is the way it is... This is important.
I need to know whether these or other possibles are going to negatively affect the value of Garands in the current market. Not that I want to make money on Garands, but my justification to my wife is the promise that they will never decrease in value and never be a money pit.
And I want another CMP Garand now...

I don't think the Korean imports will have that much of an impact on the collector market. Some people go absolutely spastic over import marks, even the subdued ones. It might make some of the M1 vendors at gunshows come back to reality though. Personaly, I'm wanting a nice M1 carbine shooter to keep my CMP Garands company.

As far as I know, the Blue Skys were imported as complete guns, both the M-1 rifles and the M-1 Carbines.
Don't worry about these Korean carbines and Garands lowering the value of CMP guns. The value of CMP rifles will only go up as the CMP stock is exhausted. Buy as many as you can now, do some horse-trading with the lesser examples if need be, but hang onto the nicest pieces you can find.

I remember buying one of the Korean expat M-1 Garands some years back. It was just as I expected, a parts gun. It shot into minute of basketball. I had it rebuilt. It now has a Barrett barrel, new wood and refinished. It looks like a brand new gun and shoots very well. It was still less than getting a Garand at a gun show for $1000 to 1200.

I've got a Blue Sky Carbine. From what I can tell, it is all still Winchester parts. Only the barrel is stamped "Blue Sky", nothing else. Shoots great, nice rifleing in the barrel, etc.. I've seen similar non imports sell upwards of $1K at shows (Well, they were asking $1K........)
