I know that this is more of an accessory question, but given that I'm asking about a certain rifle, I put it here.

I have an M1, and the only thing I'm missing is a sling. Will any decent sling work? I like the idea of cotton or nylon, but I've heard of leather slings, though I don't think I've ever seen one. It seems like leather would require maintenance of it's own, so it doesn't break down.

Given that it's an unusually heavy and somewhat wide rifle, is there a certain sort of sling I should be looking for?

You can order a sling dircectly from the CMP. They also carry bayonets which will add personal value to "love of your life".

Enjoy

My favorite sling for my Garand is the Turner Biothane. Love it. Looks sweet in brown or green too.

Turner Saddlery makes top quality slings. The leather ones are great. I have a biothane model and it did not suit me but I will say it is a personnel thing.

There are other sources of leather slings similar to the M1907 sling. I have gotten a couple from Creedmoore Sports in the past.

I do not remember if CMP has leather slings but they do have USGI cotton slings.

There are two ways to sling a leather sling, the Army way and the Marine Corp way. Look them up and again, it is personnel preference unless you were in the Army or the Marines.:)

Hope this helps.

JMHO, but a USGI cotton sling is all you need. An M1907 might be nice if you want a good shooting sling, but the cotton ones will work for that too. Much easier to operate and work just fine. Period correct as well. Real ones are common and cheap, so don't bother with a repro. You can find 'em on eBay too, but you might as well get a sling, bayonet/scabbard, cleaning kit, and all the other must-have M1 stuff from the CMP.

The M1907 is the classic sling for a Garand. They are fairly easy to adjust once you get the hang of it and add a touch of class to your rifle.

Depending on the year your Garand was produced, the GI cotton (now nylon) sling would be correct. They are super easy to use and are still inexpensive. I used one in the reversed position for years to shoot vintage military rifle matches and also on my AR15 for service rifle matches.

I bought a M1907 replica sling from sarco.com. The sling was a nice piece if leather. I got some boot oil from red wing and applied several coats to soften the leather. The oil also darkened the leather and gave it an older look. I was going to get an original GI sling but they were going for about half the price of a rifle.

As others have said, the M1907 leather and the M1 cotton or nylon slings were the issued slings with the M1 rifle. FYI, in case you didn't pick it up, when they talk about the sling slipping and such, the previous posters are referring to using the sling as a marksmanship aid. If you want to learn how to do this really well, I strongly suggest getting one of these slings and taking your rifle to an Appleseed marksmanship clinic. You have the perfect rifle for the Appleseed COF. They will let you shoot the Army Qual Test from the old days to see how you stack up. It is loads of fun and you will learn a lot. www.appleseedinfo.org
