I am having some problems with my Garand. When I took it out to fire it not to long ago it was ejecting the en bloc clip early on about the third or fourth round. It did function correctly twice though and spit out the en bloc on the eight round. Any ideas on fixing the problem?

Start with the cheapest component that might be causign the problem- Clip latch spring, if that doesn't solve the problem check the clip latch for wear and replace if necessary.

Try Fulton Armory for parts.

Also is it from CMP? If so, give them a call.

Everybody says it is the clip latch and it usually isn't.
The accelerator tab on your bullet guide is most likely worn and the bullet guide needs to be replaced.
The bullet guide controls the operating rod guide and accelerator, if it is worn down, it causes the op rod guide to exert pressure on the clip latch causing premature release of the clip.

I suggest looking for a post war stamped bullet guide as a replacement.
The tab is built up and strengthened in these and the wear problem was pretty well eliminated when this part was introduced.

Related scenario

I just bought my first M1 Garand. In all likelihood, it will probably be my only gun; I'm not much of a gun person, and I don't feel that owning guns would realistically improve my odds of not being shot. The M1, however, is near and dear to my heart, primarily for historical purposes.

My problem is identical to one posted before: the bandoleer and live rounds are ejected prematurely (usually after the third shot). However, when I purchased the gun, with it were 16 rounds of what appeared to be much older ammo. I'm assuming this older ammo was surplus and designed for the M1. I wanted to save that original ammo, but decided to fire off 8 rounds to test the premature ejection. Sure enough, all 8 rounds fired fine.

My question: Could the modern 30.6 ammunition that I buy anywhere be the cause of the problem? If I bought surplus ammo online from the '60s/'70s, could this resolve the issue?

Thank you for your time.

I really doubt it is the ammo, but I am not a Garand expert.

Surplus ammo is the way to go with M1's. You can damage your rifle if you shoot modern ammo in it without an adjustable gas plug.

I used to shoot the M1 in service rifle high power competition.
I dealt with parts wearing over several years. I took one M1 through 3 barrels.

I see this same question more than any other on an M1 not working properly.

The most likely cause of early ejection is a bent or worn follower arm or a bent or worn follower arm pin.

If you don't know what part this is: The en bloc clip and ammo rest on the follower. The arm is the slightly curved part below the follower that pushes it up.
