Hi all,
The answer is dated March of 1940. The cost of the M1 Garand Rifle was 80.00 per rifle so that's the correct answer. However, added to the breakdown would be "Spare Parts" 8.60 and of course "Accessories" of 2.40 for a Grand Total of 91.00.
I hope you had fun with this one. Just wait

Thanks again for taking the time and effort to open and read and hopefully reply to it.

So 64 years ago an M1 cost 2.268 ounces of gold. Yesterday's closing price for gold 412.60 an oz.

This would be equivalent to $943.20. This is a simplistic comparison, of course. Still, it shows what great bargains are available.

Of course, in 1940 Americans were not permitted to own gold. Some times things do get better.

grendelbane,
You must remember that Ordnance was putting the price way up to get funding while it could. This is all part of what I call in the books Garand-Gate.
Thanks again
