I changed a standard m1a flash suppressor for an NM fs w/ bayonet lug. It has bullet clearence but is slightly/I] canted. Is there a simple fix to this or is it even a concern?
Your barrel may be indexed improperly (over or under tighten depending upon which way it is canted) and that would cause the cant in the front sight and suppressor. It is not a problem unless you find yourself running out of windage adjustment on the rear sight and/or adjustment of the front sight on the dovetail.
Thanks for the feed back. Does the alignment guage guide the fs on straight or is it only for checking clearence? Wouldn't lateral pressure on the guage damage the rifling and/or crown? The cant is slight-less than 1/16th difference between the two sides. I used a .30 caliber aluminum rod as a guage.
Yep, and cleaning the thing can really screw up the crown without the alignment cap for the cleaning rod.
Check on the specs for a real NM flash suppressor. I think Springfield Armory sold fake "NM" suppressors with the muzzle end opened up and no bayonet lug.
Thats what I thought. Thanks. The FS is a NM from Springfield with a bayonet lug to finish the look. It's accuracy, power, and handling is impressive. I bought the base model 1902. Very pleased. The bayo lug was as much for looks as a tip-o-the-hat to my father- in- law who carried an
M14 in Viet Nam. I grew up on "that plastic toy gun" which I have every confidence in....but that m1a is pretty sweet.
