I am thinking of selling my FAL and M1A to build a pretty nice AR10. I enjoy the M1A but to get it out to 800 with a respectable group I think I'm going to end up having to keep dumping money into it. It's not a national match. What do you think keep it or let it go??

The .308 AR platform rifles are inherently accurate. I've had range time with several different brands and styles. My personal AR is a Noveske N6 with a 21" barrel. I do prefer shooting it over my NM M1A but it does have better optics and milder recoil. A slight accuracy advantage also.

For 800yds and beyond I well use my 6.5Grendel. This round is much easier for me to buck the wind with. For me, windage is the big challenge in long range shooting.

Of course it is. The earth spins, and you are on it. There is the wind, also. Calculating drop is not difficult.

Thanks guys, this is one of those I know I should but don't want too things. Just needed that extra push over the edge.

CSestp, I hope you enjoy what you decide on. The M1A is a beautiful rifle, but I would venture to guess that the AR-10 is probably more accurate out of the box.

The 338 Federal AR-10 sounds nice to me.

The AR-10 style generally wins the accuracy/dollar calculation for any vaguely military-styled .308, and it's also at the top for a price no object .308 semiauto. If you're primarily looking for accuracy, your proposed change is very sensible.

Yes, if your goal is to shoot small groups at long range, the AR is definitely the way to go. However, I have always regretted selling nice guns and wish I kept some of my previous ones around. If at all possible, I would try to keep the M1A and buy the AR too. Just leave the M1A as a nice lightweight iron sights shooter, and make the AR into your big heavy long range precision rifle. Sure they're both 7.62mm semi autos, but you can keep them both around for different roles. If you sell it, you will probably find yourself missing that old M1A someday!

But if you can't possibly afford to keep both, you can always buy another M1A someday.

Yes, it will most likely be the very day you sell it.

I am lucky enough to own some of each, finally decided to scope one of my M1As, a standard loaded with walnut stock. my AR10s remain in the A2 configuration and will stay that way (til my eyes get worse anyway) Armalite for me and Springfield Armory in my M1As
