Hi there, i picked up a Springfield Armory M1A recently and I want to put scope on it. I was just looking for some recommendations. The maximum distance that i would be shooting at is around 500 yards. I've looked at Leupolds and I'm unsure if the lower cost ones can stand up to the .308 and keep its zero.

My problem with the 10x+ Leupolds is that at maximum magnificiation, the eye relief is extremely unforgiving. I have been using a 3-12x Nikon Monarch for the past 5 years with great results (M1A, max distance 600 yards).

If you are married to the Leupold brand, then I feel confident that a VXIII or better will hold up just fine.

Mine has a Burris TAC30 1-4x24 mounted on an ARMS #18 mount with Leupold QRW Medium QD rings. It works great, and is the best setup I have found for this rifle.

I am an old grunt, got a couple of M1As, in basic we shot at 600 yards with the M14, after all these years, mine are still with irons only. thought about going with a Bassett mount and good scope, but I am happy with what I can do now, just cant justify spending another $1000 plus on it and I also hate the cheek piece, makes it look so unlike an M14.

I have a Leupold MK 4 PR scope that was on mine. It is the least expensive MK 4, with the mildot reticle. Recently pulled it off as I needed the rings for another rifle.

Leupold scopes have a lifetime warranty, and some of the recoil abuse I've put some of mine through, has never created an issue that needed any repair.

My M1a has a GDI G1-OSM mount on it. Quite nice, you can use the irons with it on, but if you have a NM hood, it may get in the way of a proper zero. The standard aperture allows better use.

Thanks guys, i'll check out the scopes you all have mentioned and get back to you on what i am going to get.

I have a Leupold VX-3 3.5-10x40 with a duplex reticle in Weaver rings on a Bassett Weaver mount.

A few points:

1. The M1A may eject brass such that the brass hits the windage knob of your chosen scope. A duplex reticle can be rotated counterclockwise 90* to eliminate this as a problem if it occurs. A distance compensating reticle will be a problem if this happens (it hasn't been a problem with mine but I didn't want to take a chance at the time I set up for a scope).

2. Two point mounts will not stay tight or stable. You'll need a 3-point mount (Bassett is one while others use the stripper clip guide for the third point of attachment)

3. The Bassett mount is highly regarded by the guys on the M14 fora. Check http://www.bassettmachine.com. It is a quick release mount that returns to zero, mounts firmly and gets the job done. If you have more than one M1A, it can be moved from rifle to rifle quickly and easily. I love mine and recommend it unreservedly.

4. You'll need a raised cheek piece for a proper cheek weld. I have been very pleased with my cheek piece by US PALM.

A Pride Fowler RR600, RR800, or RR900. The RR900 is designed for the M14 for the military. I like using Bassett mounts for quick on/off and repeatability after removal.
