for you guys with scope mounted M1As, is the cheek piece that necessary? I am thinking of mounting a Bassett high rise mount on my M1A standard loaded Springfield Armory so I can still use my irons.

Using a traditional stock, the cheek piece will be needed. The only setup I've used where you could get away without one is when using the ARMS mount and low rings. It still pushes the limits of the cheek weld, but you can get away without using one.

With a Bassett and high rings you'd definitely need one, unless you've got a really tall melon.

if I am gonna need a cheek piece, I will probably just stay with my irons. gotta be a way without cheekpiece, dont see how it makes that much difference, especially with the low recoil of the M1A.

Have you looked at the Springfield Armory mount? Works fine on my SuperMatch, and I can also use the irons underneath. At least on my gun, the mount detaches and remounts with no significant change of zero, and is low enough that the strap-on cheekpiece is optional.

I've noticed that the E2 stock raises the head a bit. Not enough for a big scope on high mounts, but enough for a scout scope on low mounts.

you could always shoot head up. Never was my personal preference, but its doable with practice.

Unless you have an unusually large jaw, or enjoy a chin-weld, its definitely recommended.

This is a repro cheek riser from a No4(T) Enfield; with half an hour of sanding, a bit of Acraglass, and two stainless screws to match the barrel.

After a few range sessions without it, i put it on since i had it around; and it definitely tightened up my groups.
