I am looking at buying an 18" M1A with a Smith Enterprize muzzle brake. I am curious if anyone has tried firing a similar setup at night. How much muzzleflash did you see?

If you have the standard version, how much flash did you see at night?

California doesn't trust us with flash suppressors.

Thanks,
Dave

The Smith Brake is an absolutely excellent Brake.
As a flashider it leaves a lot to be desired.

The Smith Vortex flashider is excellent but your good government sees fit to prevent the law abiding citizens of your state from possessing such an excellent piece of technology.

Consider Arizona,,,,,,

I have an M1 Garand in .308 with an 18" barrel and a Smith brake, and I'll be doing some night shooting this coming weekend. I'll let you know how much flash it has - which should be the same as what you'd see from an 18" M1A.

Thanks Ian. My Garand, in standard configuration, has virtually no muzzle flash at night. I would be interested in your findings.

Dave - I tried out both the Smith brake on my M1 and the standard Springfield brake on an 18" M1A. The Smith brake (with Australian surplus ammo) created a flash about 3 or 4 inches long out the muzzle, plus 2-3 inch flames out the top and side vents. The Springfield brake (with PMC factory ammo) made a bit less flash - about 2 inches out the vent holes all around and 2 or 3 inches out the muzzle.
