I've been reading a bit about M1A's after I've gotten the itch to pick one up. Alas, I have no idea what prices are like for the used market, especially with the upgrades listed below. All I know is that I've seen new Standard Springfield M1As with synthetic stock for ~$1200 or so.

I have a friend that is looking to get rid of his. It's an older Springfield. He wasn't sure of the year, but he said it was "back when Springfield first came out with them" and he thought the early 80's. He said that it's been rebuilt to replace the few non-USGI parts so that everything now is USGI. Both front and rear sights are NM. He has a muzzle brake attached. It has a chrome heavy USGI barrel that's been glass bedded in a heavy stock. He said he'd throw in 5 mags, a case, and some miscellaneous parts laying around that includes an extra USGI bolt.

He wants $1250 for it.

I know that the older USGI parts bring a premium and there's some nice upgrades on it, but it was more than I was looking to spend to just get started. I won't be attending any National matches any time soon and do 90% of my shooting offhand. I was even thinking I wanted a synthetic stock for a more suitable "field gun". He said he's shot it a lot but it's in excellent condition and he hasn't touched it in years.

So, my questions for you experts.... :)

1) What do you think of the price?

2) How much weight does the heavy stock and heavy barrel add to the new Springfield Wood Standards I've held in my local gun shop? (I'm going to go look at it) but is the heavy stock shaped the same as the normal wood stock?

3) Would this rifle be totally inappropriate for my thoughts as an offhand gun that I want to be able to sling up and hump around if I have to... or will I not really notice the weight difference?

To throw another monkey wrench in, he said he has another M1A that is pretty much stock. It's just as old but doesn't have as many USGI parts and has the normal barrel and normal wood stock. It does have NM sights. But he said he'd take the same price for it - $1250. I thought that was a little odd... unless my ignorance of the market means the first rifle is a total steal.

Any help/advice you have would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

That's a fair price. A match barrel will add a pound or two to the rifle (including the big stock). As long as you aren't lugging it around hunting, the weight will help your offhand (my match M14 is just under 15lbs).

The price sounds good to me. For comparison's sake, I bought an early '90s Springfield National Match M1A with lots of USGI bits, six 20 round magazines and two 10 round magazines for $1200.

That sounds like a nice rifle you're looking at. The heavy barrelled rifles balance strange to me, all the extra weight from the heavy barrel is out front, makes the rifle muzzle heavy but you can add lead shot in the buttplate compartment to help offset that if it bothers you. The thick match stocks are fatter around the pistol grip, this may be a slight problem if you've got small hands. Nice to have an extra headspaced bolt for that rifle too. I'm not too thrilled about muzzle brakes, that's just my personal preference - I dunno if flash suppressors are illegal in your state, if they ain't, then you could always replace the brake later if you wanted to.

That's a great price, but with the heavy barrel and stock it will be a couple of pounds heavier than a standard M1A. It would be a good offhand gun though!

The second one you mentioned is a fair, but not great, price. I'd go with #1, if you don't like the weight you can always have it rebarreled, and synthetic stocks shoot great and are cheap. You can get a couple hundred, easy, for the heavy USGI barrel on eBay.

To throw another question into the mix with my original ones...

I've heard some people say that the heavier barrel may have problems with some surplus ammo. Anyone have experience with this? Anything to worry about or is it just a once in a billion kinda thing?

Nope. It's just putting miles on the barrel and not shooting as well as the match stuff.

Dude,

Just get 'em both. You know you want 'em. Then check out www.rwva.org
Get to an Appleseed and wring them puppies out to the max. By the time you leave there will be a big smile on your face, and you will know more about those two than you ever thought possible. There will be all kinds of M14/M1A fanatics there.

There is Appleseeds in Indiana, plus 2 in Kentucky (and 1 in Illinois if you REALLY want to take a road trip) for this year.

Be sure to register on the forum. lots of nice folks there to help you out too. Besides, if you decide to keep one or neither (I'd REALLY be shocked at that) there would be a receptive group of people who like 'em enough that just one more wouldn't be too far of a stretch. M1A's and M1's are kinda like potato chips, you can't have just one!

Oh yeah, that's right, you're all ready there! ......no wonder that post looked so familliar.....

You caught me. :) Since I'm a newb to the rifle side of firearms, I thought I'd ask the fine folks at RWVA forum for their opinion too.
