This is my 1943 Springfield M1D Garand Sniper Rifle. I've had it for about 8 years now. I purchased it from the CMP without all the extra Sniper rifle parts, and its taken me till now to track down all original USGI parts to put it back into its Sniper configuration. I made this video of my first trip out using the scope. Hope you enjoy it.

I bought just the rifle from the CMP. Thats why it took me so long to acquire the rest of the sniper parts. They were much most scarce, and way more expensive than I expected. I think I found the scope mount in Germany, and I think the stock pad was in Denmark.
That's a well traveled piece of kit!

At 0.19 you say the M1 D has a shortened barrel?

Does you rifles barrel have the 555 drawing number on top of the barrel under the rear handguard?

The official paperwork is very cool!

Are you zeroing it poa=poi, or are you sighting it in so poi is always displaced to the right with the same amount of displacement as bore to scope to avoid double (horizontal AND vertical) parallax?

I am considering setting my CMP M1D getting the correct USGI mount (~$500) and a aftermarket M84 scope (~$375) but keep chickening out about having to buy the the real USGI mount from Denmark.

They shortened the barrel from the standpoint of the integrated barrel block being added into the equation, which takes up the extra space. I dont remember on the drawing number, and I'm not tearing it apart. I only do a disassembly once ...maybe twice a year to try and keep the wood and metal fit as tight as possible. I think the FOIA request is pretty neat. It took like 6-8 months to get it back from the Army. The records only go back to 1982, but its still neat to see. I mainly sent the request because someone at the range told me that my rifle is fake, and the CMP just creates the M1d's from parts. I knew the guy didn't know what he was talking about, but I was happy to see the records to alleviate the lingering doubt after being told my rifle was fake. Regarding the zeroing, we just did a quick zero of the cross hairs to the laser bore sight. My main concern was verifying if the scope mount would hold a zero. (-And it certainly needs to be dialed in further than that.) The scope mounts are notorious for slipping and not holding position if they don't mate properly. I was lucky, and it held tight. My friend brought other rifles to shoot, and I had another rifle as well, so we didn't do a full session of dialing in the M1d. But, we were consistently ringing steel at 200 yards, so I'm happy. I was nervous about dropping big money on the scope mount, and hoping #1 that a repro doesn't show up in the mail, and #2 that its not worn to the point that it wouldn't hold position, but... it worked fine. All is good. I believe I got the mount and leather cheek pad out of Denmark, and the flash hider was somewhere in Germany. I bought them at three different times, from three different places, so I don't 100% remember. I got the scope from someone here in the states on ebay. Its a little rougher than the rest of the rifle, but after some gentle cleaning of the exterior and the dials, it works good.

As the owner of a “I’m pretty sure it’s a (real) M1D, but…” I would love to have the FOIA paperwork!

While the upper rear handguard is shortened to make room for the mounting block, I believe the block is just sleeved on to the existing barrel over the chamber area, the barrel has no lenght removed, only a slight amount of barrel diameter Is removed from around the chamber area.

A good deal finding period parts to go with your M1D rifle.

I got a M1D CMP Special with a reproduction scope 10 years ago or so.

Anyway, it is nice to have a rifle with period correct parts.
