Well, I'm pleasantly surprised today!

Pics are in this thread, scroll down

Some background info... I bought a cheap M44, in crappy shape. I cleaned it up, replaced the dryrotted stock, refinished it, cleaned up the rust, replaced some small parts, mounted a red dot, and took it to the range.

Well, I got there, set up on the 100 yard range, and promptly didn't hit the paper....

DUH! start smaller with the reddot...

Went to 25 yard range. First shot was at the edge of the paper, as was the second shot... and the third. But the group was overlapping.

Adjusted it to the bullseye, and fired another group, then went to 50 yards... and shot another overlapping 3 round group! Then the screw holding the front of the mount came loose (I forgot loctite... dangit) and screwed me up.

But those initial groups were VERY encouraging, considering I didn't think I was very good. It's amazing that with a little TLC, some replacement trigger parts, a new stock, and a detailed cleaning, this 40 dollar hunk of steel can actually make a nice rifle.

I've been toying with the idea of going on a deer hunt with a buddy of mine, and I think that seals the deal.

Russian rifles rock! The only bad thing is... they seem to be multiplying in my closet! :uhoh: :uhoh:

For those interested, it's a Hungarian M44, with a BSA red dot sight, and the mount was made by NCStar. The light ball czech silver tip ammo, which I knew to be accurate from it's performance in my 91/30, seems to really like the M44. I daresay it performed better in this rifle than the scoped 91/30. Any guesses as to why?

Oh, and one quick question for y'all... if I take this reddot off, so that I can put something else, like a scope, will the reddot retain it's zero? Will it be reasonably close, or should I rezero if swapping optics?

Off to clean! Where's that windex...

James
