So i purchased an m44 from gander mountain today that was pretty stripped, and it needs a bolt and bottom plate. The guy at the counter said the bolt is impossible to find and not compatible with a 91-30. So i took the bolt out of my 91-30 and put it in to see if it fits and it cycles great. Is there something im missing or are all mosin bolts the same? Just dont want to do anything unsafe.

WAS AT A GUN SHOW TODAY THERE WAS A GUY THERE THAT HAD A BOX FULL OF M44 PARTS BOLT , LOWER HOUSING PART FOR THE MAG SPRING , bunch of small parts wanted $35 for all of it,

let me know if you want it ill pick it up just pay me the $35 + $7.00 to get back in and shipping

i started to pick them up as i have 4 M44'S

Believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see.

91/30 bolt will work fine, but check headspace with the new bolt before taking it to the range.

Not sure about the interchangeability between those two models(I think they should be the same) but ANY TIME YOU CHANGE BOLTS YOU SHOULD HAVE THE HEADSPACE CHECKED.

appreciate the offer chevelle , but i bought this gun against my wifes will and cant sink any money into at this time. Thats why i was hoping to rob parts if i could. Also how do you check head spacing.

Headspace is checked with a set of go/no-go gauges. The bolt must close on the GO gauge (indicating headspace above the minimum spec) and must not close on the NO GO gauge (if it does, headspace is above max spec)

Or pay a gunsmith to check it.

AFAIK, the only non-interchangeable bolts on a Mosin are from some Finn M27s. They have small "wings" on the bolt carrier that require two grooves in the rear of the receiver. These bolts will not go into other actions, but any other bolt can go into the M27.
Of course, there is also the bent/non belt bolt issue if you have a scope.
