Sporterzing a $80 M44, not a collector.
I want to reconfigure the magazine trigger housing so that magazine does not protrude below the stock.
I somewhere along the way I saw an article on doing this but for the life of me I can find it now.

Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks

Easiest way would be to cut it off flush with the stock and MIG weld a flat plate to the bottom, this would make it a single shot though but if you're looking for a mag capacity of any kind it'll be something like 2+1 or maybe even 1+1 since it's a single stack.

I'm not sure how to make it so that you can still unload the mag from the bottom, I'm sure it can be done and would be rather easy for someone who has fabrication experience but I lack in that field. The release goes up inside the bottom part that you would have to cut off but if you could modify the release like an SKS style there would be little you would have to do to make the mag spring and follower work but again MIG welder and some precision tools are needed.

Reid Coffield did a series of articles on sporterizing a Mosin in Shotgun News, where he performed this modification, among several others. SGN was supposed to be putting together a CD/DVD with a collection of articles, including the series on sporterizing the Mosin. I'd suggest checking with them to see if ti's available yet.
