There is a Mauser in my local pawn shop that looks to be in pretty good shape. The stock isn't terribly beaten and the action is pretty smooth.

The marks on it were HP-J

The serial number is T20651 there are some markings in a foreign language that I couldn't make out but at the end of it it said 44 I believe. This was on the side of the receiver.

Underneath the gun there was and square looking mark with a U or n in the middle of it.

They were asking 250$ for it and I'm totally new to collecting rifles and esp the mausers. Can anyone tell me if this is a fair deal and where this gun was from or anything on its history?

Thanks

There was a crest but the lighting was terrible and the guns were situated on a rack with a cord lock running through all the trigger guards so I couldn't rotate it enough to see it clearly. I might bring a flashlight with me to check next time if I go back to look at it.

Google "m48 mauser preduzece 44"

It sounds like a Yugoslavian Mauser. Without pictures, it could be a scrubbed German 98k or a Yugoslavian produced M48.

Look at pictures on the interned of both and see. If it is a german 98k remarked, than that is a steal in my opinion. For a Yugoslavian M48 that is a good price. Both are very good quality 8mm rifles.

My guess without seeing it is that is is a M48.
