i recently purchased a milsurp yugo sks. It's california legal with the grenade launcher removed and a muzzlebrake spot-welded on the barrel. I found that my rifle is not able to shoot semi-auto, i have to cycle the bolt everytime i want to fire. I even checked the gas-cutoff for the single/semi-auto and placed in the correct position. It still wouldn't fire correctly. after shooting off a few stripper clips, i tried cycling the gas-cutoff and it got stuck and would go to the right into the semi-auto postion. after shooting some more rounds the gun just jammed. Can anyone help me out here? after field stripping and cleaning the rifle the gas-cutoff will still not move. I've heard that yugs sks's have a problem with the piston in the gas tube. what should i do? a worker at turners suggested goign to a gunsmith. but i would like to fix this problem on my own.

The problem with my M59 (which I also bought from Turners) is that the gas tube does not fit tight so it's leaking during the gas operation. I shoved a folded bit of paper between the rear of the gas tube and the receiver and that got the front of the gas tube to fit snug.

re:

i heard you can fix that problem by using either a washer or a liquid sealant...i forgot what the specifics are but you can search it online

Did you completely remove all of the cosmoline when you purchased the rifle? I had to strip mine down bare and then boil everything in water to get all the cosmo out. One of my Yugo's had the handguard and gas piston completely filled with cosmo. I mean like someone maliciously packed the stuff in there.

I am guessing you had some cosmo in the gas valve and the heat of shooting cooked the cosmo and froze the gas valve. Some brake cleaner might work get it loose.

Check out these sites:

They both are loaded with great info. Good luck. Once you have your SKS running right you will really enjoy it!

i actually tried spraying some brake cleaner into the cut-off valve....and it was still stuck....and yes, i didn't completely clean out all of the cosmoline when i fired it....i did a quick cleaning

does anyone know how to get the cut-off valve unstuck???
