Just found out my youngest son the machinist has a new job.

He is working 24/7, and all the overtime he can stand, making the 20 grain steel penetrator tips for the new Lake City M885A1 EPR (Enhanced Performance Ammo).

Anyone shot any of it yet??

I would give my left "you know what" to get two rounds, one for my cartridge collection, and one for my son the machinist.

But that seems very unlikely!!

The company he works for wouldn't even tell him what it was for, or how it worked.

We fixed that on the internet last night!

I get a kick out of the "more environmentally friendly" aspect of the new ammunition.

I was at a meeting of the state shooting ranges yesterday and one of the speakers was from an environmental company that does work for ranges, helping them deal with the state environmental regulatory agencies and the federal EPA. One of the things he mentioned was that the Army had found that their experiments with Tungston bullets resulted in Tungston contaminated zones that leached Tungston into water supplies and ended up being more toxic than lead. Another thing he mentioned was that copper was found to be more toxic to fish than lead.

There were many more topics covered, but these were two of them that stood out, as they're both being pushed as alternatives to lead in bullets.

As to the question about firing the new ammunition, no I haven't fired any. I've seen mention of some of the brass showing up in the marketplace, though, especially the four staked primers.

Thanks for the link, rc.

Hope this helps.

Nifty little critter isn't it.:D Yeah I wonder how long it will be before it hits the surplus market.:( If what they say is true about performance we mere mortals will never be allowed to own anything that destructive.

Really? Cause I just so happen to have a couple (only two). Though I'm not really sure what I would do with what you are offering.

This may be off topic, but can ReloaderFred give me the name of the environmental company or where I might find out more about the toxicity of copper vice lead. I've been working on a number of indoor "lead free" ranges and all the ammo that's allowed is sintered copper. I'm wondering about the toxicity of copper to human beings?

Copper is not very toxic to humans, or at least it better not be, being that all the fresh water in our homes flows in through copper pipes!
