M9: Commercial vs Military?

My M9 sits right next to me as I type. Great pistol, especially for the money. I blacked out the center pip on the rear sight, and added paint to the two side dots to make it a three dot arrangement. I also added a "D" spring, and did a polish job making the action very sweet. Many years ago you could buy a parts bag full of all metal parts for very cheap, so I swapped out all polymer coated parts with steel. Can't make the thing jam, nice long chamber leade so it's not fussy, smooth soft recoil impulse, very accurate, chrome lined bore, cheap mags and parts... What's not to like.

Have seen kits from Beretta to make it a 'G' model, AKA, decocker rather than a safety if that is a desire. I find the grip actually a bit small/short, but such is the life of a person with XXL hands. As for some differences from a "real" M9- The PB on the slide is very plain, there will also be a ASSY number on the left side of the hammer, and "PM" on the slide and barrel (Beretta did release a commercial M9 with these, in a kit that included an OD military holster in a giant box). My later made M9 from 07 has ASSY numbers on the slide, barrel and frame, and a "PM" on the barrel only. Serial numbers for each type have their own designator and range.

If you like the non-radisized grip and straight dustcover of the M9, I'd say jump on it. Not that they give them away, but I'm surprised how little they cost compared to the competition, especially being made in the US of A. Good luck.
