I put this FR-8 scout rifle together a few years ago. I originally retained the original tri-frame that contained the front sight housing and the frame for the bayonet mount/cleaning kit. It was always an issue that the top of the circular front sight frame is right in the center of the sight picture when an optic was mounted. Also, I came to realize that while it looks cool, the cleaning kit tube and bayonet mount are not necessary, and just add extra forward weight on a rifle that needs to be light and handy, and that I would never use the bayonet... so I did a little trimming.

There was also an issue with the rear sight. The 200m aperture was too small for use in low light, or for fast target acquisition. I drilled it out to 7/64", and it is much better.

The factory trigger was also not great. it was crisp, but heavy with a long take-up -- so I installed a Timney Sportsman K98 trigger. It was less than $50, in keeping with the low cost of this project (I had less than $400 in it before this), and was a huge improvement. It is now crisp and light, with no take-up. It was also extremely easy to install. I highly recommend this trigger for surplus rifles that may see field use.

I also installed a new Aimpoint PRO in a Vortex Tactical Low ring. This allows it to co-witness with the irons.

She is all ready for the Pecos Run 'n Gun next month (10K in the desert with shooting). I'm going for the bolt gun trophy. Range report soon, when I make it out to get her re-zeroed. Also, I have a Silencerco Omega on the way, along with a QD trifecta flash hider in 15x1.

Here is what she looks like now overall:

Standard aftermarket K98 stock?

I've been thinking about putting a 2-3 slot Pic rail on my FR8's front ring, yours looks great.

I would also recommend the XS Scout mount, which I have, instead of drilling and tapping the front ring. It gets you a lower rail surface (low enough to co-witness a red dot with the irons or get a scope low enough to require minimal raising of the comb for cheek weld), it gives you more rail space, and it doesn't require any D&T. The FR-8 uses the 1.1" version of the mount. It installs with set screws and Acraglas.

I've always liked carbines. I think the scout rifle concept worthwhile.

I like what you've done with that rifle.

That sounds awesome. Please let us know how it goes. I'll need to look into it, sounds like something I'm gonna want to do sooner than later.

FR8 Mods

I have an FR8 that has been sitting around for years.
Looking at what you have done makes me want to do the same thing.
Very nice.

It is seriously awesome. It is by far the most fun shooting activity I have found. So much fun in fact that I helped start a similar event here in Oklahoma called the Pawnee Run 'n Gun, which we do every January and July.
