Since Blackhawk and other 'tactical' gear mfrs make stuff in Vietnam and others such as Camelbak make stuff in the Philippines, I believe this is relevant to us.

Backpacker magazine has a pretty good article about Osprey, an outdoorsey pack manufacturer that moved to Vietnam. It's in the August 2005 issue.

So what do you think of the quality of gear made in Vietnam and the Phillippines?

All I know is my made in Vietnam Blackhawk holster started coming apart under range conditions, hardly field use.

Not so much the country of manufacture as the lower standard of materials and quality of stitching.

But they sell a lot more stuff at a higher level of profit than they did when they made my suprisingly durable clone of the Eagle Omega tactical vest...

So long as Osprey does not skimp on the materials and keeps QC tight there should be no difference.

I was told the T shirts in the West Point gift shop were all made in Vietnam. How's that for weird?

My "Made in the Phillipines" Camelbak is holding together nicely. I'm beating the ___ out of it on my weekend sojourns. It gets bashed against trees, dropped on rocks, submerged in various bodies of water, dragged through dense undergrowth and brush (like salal, huckleberry, blackberry, gorse and wild blueberry), and it still appears to be in really good shape. At this rate, it's going to be years before I'll need to consider replacing it. ;)

My Filipino Camelbak takes a beating, too.

The only thing that ever started coming apart was the stitching on the shoulder pad of my Made in USA Eagle range bag.

Osprey gear has a great rep. Hopefully this move won't impact their quality. The "wing" stabilization system they use on their packs is unique and provides good load stability.

I have a osprey pack that was manufactured in Vietnam and have not had any problems with it. It is of exceptional quality and seems to be holding up very well so far. It is the Aether 60 model and I normaly carry about 25-30 lbs in it very comfortably. I am leaving next week and going to RockyMtn and then up to YellowStone. I will packing for about two weeks total and have no reason to think the pack won't hold up.

Camelbaks are made to last. I've had many, many gnarly mountainbike crashes while wearing one and they are no worse for the wear.

Call it capitalism triumphing where military might was not allowed to do so. ;)

Quality - he!!! I have serious philosophical issues with buying anything that's made in Viet Nam. I don't make a fetish out of it, for instance, some of our work shirts are made there. However, I did let the shirt supplier know that it wasn't appreciated. They told me that they don't know where the shirts are made when they order. Could be Costa Rica this shipment, Bangladesh the next & Nam the third.

The regieme in that country has too much to answer for, for me to offer any support I don't have to.

I am with CB900F...I wouldn't buy ANYTHING from that egg sucking commie country...value?? quality???...give me a break !!!! there are bigger issues here, then the bang for YOUR buck. >>>"DE OPPRESSO LIBER"<<<

pssst... your computer components are made in taiwan or china, doesn't matter if you've got apple, dell or toshiba or whatever, they're never made in the US. Turn your mouse or keyboard over, and tell me where it's made.
intel chips are made in phillipines and malaysia factory.

it's material, not where it's made.

So, let me see how this works. You know that a guy who has a local store is a registered level 3 sex offender. His convictions are public record & are well deserved. But Joe public should do business with him in any case because he offers name brand products at the best price.

Let's see, if Joe public boycotts him, then the stigmatization may in fact drive the poor mis-understood pervert into more anti-social behaviour.

Aren't political correctness & the N.E.A.'s educational philosophy wonderful?

I'll take what I consider to be the moral high road in both cases. I prefer not to aid Viet Nam, and I'd not shop at the pervert's store.

psssst, gudel.....Taiwan, Malaysia, and the Philippines...are NOT viet nam. It's about quality and honorable choices, not materials...I will, and do, buy foreign....just NOT from low life....egg sucking commie countries. Believing.... "It's material, not where it's made"...is too self serving, with a blind eye, to the reality of the past, present...or future....of the world WE help to shape. Quality choices and actions, are what change the future.....nothng personal gudel, this goes far beyond...me, my, and mine.
