Well I lurk around and try to soak up as much knowledge as I can around here and tried making my own lube pills from recipes on here. I bought four pounds of bees wax some Crisco heated it all up let it cool in a pan and used a 450 case with a nail as a plunger to push out the lube pills and with only a half a pound of bees wax and Crisco with a splash of olive oil I made about 300 pills and still have a lot of scrap in the jar to make more.

You guys are a great source of information and just wanted to say thanks. I am fairly new to black powder (1851 Navy Colt) and really enjoy it.

Use them the same as wonder seals over the ball in the cylinder to lube and prevent chain fires. Although it is my understanding that with an properly fit and seated ball chain fires are very unlikely.

The same lube can be used over 100% heavy wool and punched out to the proper size for lubed wads over powder too.

Wonder seals cost about $7.00 per hundred. For less than three dollars I have 500+ . I also get a lot of satisfaction just doing it myself.

There is something wonderful about the satisfaction of making something yourself, the savings is just a benefit. I'm currently making my own silica packs.

Making our own wads from durofelt, the cost depending on size is $.019 to $.034 cents each. The wool scrapes the bore on its way out, the lube pill just melts, similar to lubing over the balls I guess.

I make my own lubed wads. They are a little greasier than Wonder Wads so I also cut card stock wads which I use over powder. I always keep one cap and ball pistol loaded. When range shooting I don't bother with the card wad.
With the last batch of wads I used thinner felt but 2 layers of different colors, which makes the wads easier to separate after pushing them out of the punch.
