I was in gander mountain the other day looking at the rifles and got to talking with one of the salesman and mentioned that i bought a 5 round mag for my FN fnar rifle because I may bring it deer hunting this year and he asked why the 5 rounder. Said if the rifle comes with a 10 rounder its perfectly legal to use deer hunting in Minnesota. As far as i know it is illegal to have a mag holding 10 rounds while deer hunting. Anyone know the correct answer?

I have not seen, heard or read about any magazine limit for rifle hunting in Minnesota. 2010 and 2011 DNR hunting regulations are available online and I just looked at them again after reading your post. Again I see no magazine capacity issue. However I think your wise to use the smaller Mag. When my daughter started hunting with an AR platform, I also found short mags for her. Five rounds is plenty. It is the impression you may give someone who is old school. When someone who may be on the fence as to how they feel about assault rifles gets a look at your hunting rig he may may draw the wrong conclusion. Image can change how the majority feels. Black rifles have come along way in the last twenty years. And are more accepted in the hunting camps today.

What did you start your daughter out on for a AR rig for deer. My daughter is wanting to hunt with me this season and the AR platform is looking pretty appealing.

Thanks guys. I agree with sticking to a smaller mag not only for the fact that I'd never need more than 5 rounds but mainly because I wouldn't want to give someone the wrong impression about my, or all deer hunters, reputation. I usually use my bolt action m70 but thought it may be cool to try a different platform. Thanks again

RCArm, I have a DPMS from Becker MN. before they moved to St. Cloud. .223 cal using Hornady Bullets. I would have rather had
her use a Larger caliber, but she shoots this rifle very well out to 150 yards. she is small framed (16 yrs old) and with the addition of the adjustable stock it was hard to beat this set up. She archery hunts also and understands shot placement. We agreed she would not take any shots outside of 75 yards. I had one hunter who commented on her set up as to not being sufficient for deer. I did not argue with him. I also picked up a .22lr bull barrel for this lower assembly and that is a new product from DPMS out of St, Cloud. Lots more trigger time and it is 1" at 50 yards on sand bags. With so many barrel options there are better calibers to chose from if your daughter is ok with recoil. The most my daughter can handle right now is 45 colt from a model 94 or a 20 Gauge for shooting clays. My 14 year old is strictly .22 lr only.

Never knew Gander had people who had accurate information about anything, but this guy was right. there are no magazine restrictions for deer hunting in MN. The only restriction I know of is 3 round restriction for Waterfowl hunting and of course the Non-Toxic shot restriction.
MN used to have caliber and case length restrictions as well but I think even they are no longer in effect.
