I'm aware that one is able to use full size Glock magazines in compact and sub-compact models in the same caliber. Does this apply to other companies such as Sig or H&K?

It holds true for XD pistols (but XDM mags are NOT compatible with XD)
Walther makes the PPS with multimple size mags for one size pistol
Walther also makes the P99 in duty and concealment size, and the smaller pistol will take the duty-size mags
Feel free to ask at a shop that carries both sizes, that's how I learned about the XDM incompatibility.

You can use the SIG P226 magazines in the P228. They'll just stick out the bottom.

Tanfoglio pistols (EAA Witnesses) are also able to use full size magazines in the compact models, and they furnish a grip filler for that use, similar to the XD series of handguns.
