has anyone tried using a piece of magnesium inplace of the flint? i was looking at one of those survival rigs which used a magnesium bar....

Magnesium doesn't throw sparks like flint does, so you can't use it in place of flint on a flintlock.

Magnesium is used for firestarters because it burns at a really high temperature and is hard to put out once it gets going. Those magnesium bars usually have a piece of flint attached to them - to start a fire you shave off some magnesium and then ignite the shavings with the flint.

I have used a magnesium bar with the flint on it and it works pretty well. Some flints seem more useful because the bar only lasts so long.

I think you're thinking of Mischmetal or Ferro Cerium, not magnesium. The metallis "Flints", used in lighters and fire starters aren't flints at all, they're ferro cerium, an allow of various rare earth metals.
Ferrocerium would work great, you'd get super hot shower of sparks from it!
I've ordered rods from www.ferrocerium.com , that I always use when camping. You might check there.

matt man, i guess i missed a step on the magnesium fire starters. the stuff JCT linked looks like it would work great if you had it in a flat bar shape. thanks.

Yeah - those magnesium firestarters have a sparking strip inlaid on one edge to produce the spark. The magnesium must be shaved off and sparked with the strip to produce fire.

hold on,

Years ago i had a T/C renigade I tried all kinds of flints and agates, that stupid thing just wouldnt spark,
down the road from me ws a guy who forgot more about front stuffer then i knew,But I stoped by his house and he had a shop in the basement,I told him what was happening, and he said Do you have your rifle with you,I said i did, well he said if you give meyour frizen, and 15 bucks,I;ll give you one back for your rifle.that will always give you spark,
hell you got it,,here he had a piece of metal that was pop rivted into the frizen, man whn that flint hit that frizzen, sparks flew into that pan and stayed burning, well that was a right handed rifle.n i shoot left,i sold it shortly after that, but it did shoot everytime, with that thing he put on the frizzen,
