Has anyone tried the new Taurus 6 shot 38 snubby model 856? Opinions? I like six shooters and it looks good in the pictures. Any comments pro and con would be appreciated. I am speaking of the all steel model not the magnesium one.

I've been looking hard at one of those since they came out. Academy has one for $325. I like the thought of the extra shot in a package no larger than the Model 85, which I have one of. I've put 1500 rounds through it in the year I've had it (60% were +P rounds)
and its still going strong.

If the 856 is of the same quality, I can sure see buying one in the future.

I've got one, carry it everyday. When I got it there was a TINY bit of unfiled metal on one side of the slot that the hand rides in. It was just enough to catch the hand and keep it from advancing the cylinder. Not every time, just once or twice every 50 rounds or so. Took it all apart and ran a little piece of sandpaper on that side; that fixed it up fine. Gave all the other innards a good cleaning and it works great. I did have the cylinder retaining screw come out on me, but I don't think I tightened it enough. Loctite'd in there now.

Just give it a good inspection before you buy it and it should be problem free. Pay close attention to the star on the extractor. I bought an 85 ultra-lite a while back that had a small amount of burring on the star. It ended up chewing itself up so bad the gun wouldn't lock up tight enough on one cylinder. Sent it back to Taurus and they fixed it, I just couldn't get comfortable carrying it again after that, so off it went in trade for a new toy.

I just put a crimson trace grip I got a deal on on Ebay, and I love the gun even more. Carry it in a manpurse/fanny pack on work days (can't carry inside) and a Don Hume J.I.T. whenever I can. Pretty accurate gun so far too.

BTW, this gun uses the same speedloaders as the S&W model 10..Convenient? I think so.

Thanks Halfded

That is the info I am wanting on it. I have an older model 85 that I have put several thousand rounds through but I like the idea of the 6 shot snubby, and since I wear mine IWB with an Uncle Mike holster it should be fine. For the money I am impressed with the Taurus revolvers. Santa is coming soon and my Wife will get it for me. The local gun shop has the Blue gun for $340. Not bad for a new +P six shot snubby. They make this gun in a Magnesium alloy frame at 13.2 oz but I prefer the all steel gun at 22 oz that I can shoot +P loads in.

I bought one for my wife after she completed her CWP training. We both found it to be a very accurate shooter. I especilly liked the smooth trigger pull. It did need to be sent back to the factory shortly after we bought it because the cylinder would lock up intermittantly during firing. They paid the freight and returned the gun in perfect firing order. All in all it's a very nice snubby.
