How good are Magpul's drop in tactical stocks for the Model 700? Wanted to go with the McMillan A4, but after adding all the things like pillars, cheek-piece, and butt-pad it will cost more than the rifle I plan to use it on. The Magpul has those features on it and is significantly less...

Yeah, I kind of wondered about that because it was under $300, I think I calc'd up the McMillan at around $832 or something. I'm looking at the 700P in 300WM, if the standard stock is okay, I'd probably stick with that, but I've read some conflicting reviews and thought I'd weed through the BS and ask the people that know...

The Magpul is a good BUDGET stock, but it will not compete with a fully made McMillian or Manners stock.

The quality will be there, but it simply will not be in the same league as a MCM or MCS.

As far as the price, until you get a custom action, a quality stock will definitely cost more than the base rifle (assumming you get all of the features).

I'm probably going to have a budget of about $2000, but that will include the scope...there are no gunsmiths within 150 miles of where I live, so I hadn't really looked at a custom option...as far as doing it myself, that would be out of my realm of experience, I'm limited to things like floating a barrel and adjusting the trigger...thought I might save some on the stock, but will probably go with the A4 in light of what I'm getting on feed-back.

You should be able to get a McMillan for closer to $600, maybe less. They ain't cheap, but considering the quality and what you get for the money they are a good deal. Give them a call.

If I didn't want to spend the money for McMillan I'd look at the B&C Medalist series.

I can't speak to their M700 offerings but I have found their mags and AR stocks to be very well made and extremely durable. Is it in the same class as a McMillan or Manners? Nope. But then I don't believe they ever meant it to be. It is what it is. A budget minded stock for the occasional shooter who does not need, or want, what the more expensive stocks offer. If you are working on a budget and are not an avid match or bench rest shooter then it may work well for you. That being said I still plan on putting a McMillan on my hunting rifle when I can afford to.

magpul is just over-hyped crap for the tacticool crowd who doesnt know any better

This statement is pretty unfounded on this product. I've used and shot the Hunter stock when it first came out. Magpul will be the first to say it was designed to get the budget 700 shooter a better stock without breaking the bank. It sure as hell is better than the SPS stock, and can get you into the bottom metal magwell game for a lot less than $400 (Which is pretty hard to do lately). It works well, has quite a bit of features, and is upgrade-able. Its not for the comp or match shooters, its not for the guys that know exactly what chassis they want, but IS nice for the money.

Its actually a decent stock if you have a 700 you want to play around with and get out of the factory offering. Frank from SH did a video review a while back in some ridiculous custom barreled action and said he has no accuracy loss. So, its not crap, actually quite the opposite, but can be considered "tacticool" if you like.

I just received my hunter stock today. I really like it...haven't shot it yet but its going to make for a great budget build. I have a 700 Tactical in 223...I plan on using the magpul bottom and MDT mags. I also have Magpul stocks on my Rem 870 and AR...very happy with all of the items and the commonality of accessories. Not sure what the Magpul hate is about, they make reliable, decent products for a decent price.

Here's a good review video:

Went to the gun store today, they didn't have what I was looking for(.300WM, 26" heavy barrel M700) so I looked at a Rem 770 in 7mag. The bolt was rough and gritty and the gun felt cheap and junky, not what I would expect from Remington. What is up with that? So I said what the heck and ordered the 700VLS in .308 Win instead. Should have it by the end of next week, pretty stoked, had one in 22-250 a few years back and really liked it...now I gotta decide what I'm going to scope it with...may keep the factory stock as I can float and bed it myself and put the savings towards the glass...

What is up with that?
It's the *new* Remington, now with a more obvious level of contempt for the customer. Before they constrained themselves to merely selling guns with safeties they knew to be broken, but now the receivers, bolts and barrels are frequently junk as well.

I hope the VLS is better, I think the receiver was the problem, it had that matte black metal and yes, even the barrel seemed like junk, the gun was really light considering the 26" bull barrel...

Yeah, I was not impressed, seems like you can't depend on quality much anymore...today I heard the some of the Ruger mini-14's are being made in France...France?!!!

Some of their security forces use mini-14s but I'm not aware of any of them actually being made in France. This almost sounds like that Target (the store) is French rumor that got started a while back.

Found this on the French Mini-14 order

Yeah, the guy who told me about it obviously got a hold of some rumor version of the truth, the article makes it plain that these were produced by Ruger for France...interesting, the gun pictured looks like the first mini I had some years back, except for the checkered stock...I'm taking my Mini Ranch model to the gun show today to see if I can unload it for some extra cash to put towards my build...I have a Colt M4 and the mini hasn't been fired in 4 years...I rarely use the Colt, for that matter, I always go back to the bolt guns for some reason...

Also note the M1 carbine like oiler/sling cut on the rear of the stock in the smaller photo. Maybe they had a bunch of surplus oilers and slings for M1 carbines laying around.

Here's my build (And other magpul family). 700 Tactical .223 in Magpul hunter. MDT 10-round mag.

I was going to suggest you check out this page, but see you already bought the VLS, I to have one and it is a laser.

Good afternoon gents, my name is Caylen Wojcik from Magpul CORE and I wanted to drop a line and answer some questions and concerns about the Magpul Hunter 700 stock.

When we designed the stock, it was meant to be a feature rich, low cost, drop-in upgrade for Remington Model 700 Short Action footprint receivers. We wanted to be able to give the shooter enhanced ergonomics, adjustability for creating a custom fit, and the reliability of an aluminum bedding block, all features that were severely lacking within the market. What we got far exceeded my expectations, and here's why. The Hunter 700 gives you everything that a higher priced stock does at a fraction of the cost, and they're much lighter than traditional fiberglass stocks or aluminum chassis systems. The aluminum bedding block used in the Hunter 700 provides the same performance, consistency, and repeatability as a $1000 aluminum chassis.

After I tested this stock with several of my custom barreled actions, I deemed it suitable for use as my competition rifle this year in the PRS. Below is a link to an article posted in our blog about my experience with the Hunter 700. I hope that the information is helpful to anyone viewing this thread who's on the fence about the Hunter 700 stock.

GC51,

If you have a $2k budget, why not look at the FN SPR. Several models to choose from, all with McMillian stock, trued action, CRF (Model 70 design), hammer forged, chrome lined barrel, 3 position safety, fluted barrel if you want.

Basically a lot of features you'd get in a custom rifle for less bucks.

And they're very accurate

I like magpul products as far as their 700 stock haven't had a chance to mess with one but I am sure it is a nice product

With all due respect justin22885 does not know what he is talking about.

I have Magpul furniture on all of my ARs, my 870 shotgun, even Magpul grips on the one 1911 I own. Over the past two weeks I have dogged the heck out of 3 Magpul Glock magazines and they have passed with flying colors.

The next Magpul product I will purchase is the Remington 700 stock. I literally trust my life to Magpul products everyday and they are easily the best engineered firearms related products out there, at a fair price, and Made In The USA. Them leaving the State Of Colorado over that state's gun control stupidity is the icing on the cake.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

That is what happens when everything you think you know comes from the internet. Unfortunately some do not know how to filter out the crap from the great info. I have tried to have discussions with folks from that camp but they already know everything so....
