Maintaining nickel finish

Also don't use any metal polish, no matter how fine it says it is unless you just absolutely have no choice.
Metal polishes are abrasive and each time you use it, you're removing a thin layer of the nickel.
You can polish right through the nickel.

Use a metal polish only if the finish has discoloration, NOT to attempt to polish out scratches, even fine ones.
The best way to care for a nickel gun is to keep a thin layer of a rust preventing lube like CLP Breakfree on it or use a good wax like Johnson's Paste Wax or Renaissance Museum wax.
NO CAR WAX.

I have been using Flitz for over twenty years on my nickel plated guns and I have yet to see any nickel loss or erosion on any of the plated surfaces. It does a great job of cleaning and protecting all of the plated surfaces. You might want to check out their website for more information on their products.

Or try "Mother's Mag Cleaner", can get it from any auto parts store. In fact, I just used it today to clean up my Ruger SP 101 3" revolver, have also used it to clean my S&W 629 6" revolver. Don't need to use with a buffer, just elbow grease will suffice.

I have used Mothers to clean up nickel guns with great success. I would guess once about every 25 years would be a plenty. In between polishing, keep a little wax on them.

If you absolutely have to clean up a nickel gun with Mother's Mag or Flitz, use it with EXTREME CAUTION to avoid damaging the nickel plating. Use only VERY LIGHT buffing.

As defariswheel warned,
....each time you use it, you're removing a thin layer of the nickel.
You can polish right through the nickel.

I like to clean mine off with isopropyl alcohol and then treat it with Johnson's Paste Wax.
