Major purchase dilemma

OK, I've finally got some money and I'm thinking about buying a new gun. Of course, I'm also thinking about a new computer, as well but I'm leaning towards the gun. Other than deciding between PC and gun, the dilemma lies in how I should go about purchasing whatever I decide I want. That, in itself, is quite a dilemma. Anyway, I've got one gun shop within about an hour of me and they have some pretty high prices so I'm trying to decide if I should maybe do an internet buy. This weekend I'm going to check out the other 2 shops outside of my area and see what they have, selection and price wise. The other problem is deciding what I want. Here's my list, so far: BHP, Sig 220, Rem 700, Glock 20, 1911 (preferably a Delta Elite).

So, any advice?

Go for a used SIG 220, or Glock and use the rest towards upgrading your current computer.

If it is just a gun you want I gotta go with a nice SIG 220 in stainless, but only if you care enough to carry the best.......just joshing, gotta get my SIGAHOLIC lics in .

If you decide to go for a computer take your money and buy components and build it yourself. You may not save gobs of money but you will most definitely get a much much much much better machine then if you bought from Dellway or the like. Besides buidling it a great learning experience that will teach you so much that it will save you lots of money in the long run. If you already are a computer geek you already know this so disregard everything I just said.

If you want email me you computer specs and we will see if you can get away with an inexpensive upgrade so you can technically get both.

Once again If you are a computer geek don't think I am talking down to you, I just don't know your level of expertise based on your post, so please don't think I am underestimating your skills of knowing what you need.

Go buy what you can get the best deal on and work your way through the list.

I'd pick up one of the pistols first. The Rem 700 (for hunting?) next. Then go from there.

You need a good 22 on that list too.

Keep in mind that if you spend $600 on a computer, in three years you'll have something that's worth about $100. If you spend $600 on a gun, and don't abuse it, you can get your money back out of it if you need to. Maybe more.

I was in the same situation not long ago. I went with the gun. The logic being that since I have a modem and only do the internet and some microsoft office type stuff some very light web page grafics etc I can get by for eternity on a 500 mhz system. my 100 some odd ram and everything is fine. I guess it depends on what you do. I don't think I would get any improvement with a new system. Now I suppose if you are one of those high speed gamers or did fancy grafics etc it might be handy.

Of the options you've provided, I'd say go w/ the 220, preferably in stainless steel.

Buy the BHP.....always a danger that Browning will stop makeing them adding collector cachet..holds its value far better than SIG..

Computers..use the one you have...hell Im building websites and editing photos on 500 systems...

Buy the gun. Unless you need the computer for something actually important (i.e. work), get by with what you have. Right now, for example, I am using a machine that is four years old. Ancient by computer standards. It works perfectly well for surfing the web, email, word processing, and all sorts of stuff. Where it would fall down is if I wanted to use it for most any of the newer games. If you buy computers to play games, you'll need one every couple years. Buy the gun. If you want to play games, buy a game console.

Look at the models you are interested in in used guns, then compare price new. Subtract the difference and ratio that against new purchase price. Then you will know which is better investment (hint : I bet the answer is COLT).

You know, I'm amazed that there were any responses to this thread. I just re-read my original post and it made absolutely no sense to me. Anyway, I stopped by the shop in my area and came away less than enthusiastic about my future purchase. The selection was horrendous. The only thing on my list that they had was a few 1911's. They had one Springfield for $700 and one for $800 and they had a Colt for $800. The Springfields were both the same model(Full Size, PX9151L + PX9608L) but with different finishes so I can't understand the price difference, especially since the difference in price on SA's website is only a dollar or two. The Colt had a really odd finish. It was a dull, light grey with a rough texture. I've never seen it before but I liked it. Are these prices decent or are they as high as I think they are?

One more thing. Is it possible to find an STI Trojan for $800? Or would that be wishful thinking?

The problem with getting a Personal Computer is that its VALUE just PLUMMETS (generally it is worth 50% of what you bought it for 6 months later..)

Whereas with a Firearm, they usually keep pace with inflation and in some cases actually go UP in value!

I would get the Browning Hi Power..a Mark III in 40 S&W and have it converted to shoot 357 Sig.

Why the Hi Power? Well the Hi Power is a SINGLE action pistol..(like the 1911) and it was John Brownings last design, which was finished by his protege (Dieudonne Saive: inventor of the FAL). From an Engineering standpoint the Hi Power is more advanced than the 1911.

Why the 357 Sig? It is a bottle nose cartridge because of its geometry, it results in a dramitic decrease in the probability of getting a misfeed.

Spend the excess money on getting the pistol smithed and tuned.
