Making black powder

I've yet to see solid proof from any of the home brew powder makers, that their homemade stuff is as accurate, clean, or gives the velocity of the factory made powder.

Where would you expect to see such solid proof?

Costs about 6 to 9 bucks a pound...take ten minutes to weigh it out...8 hours to grind and 10 minutes to wet it and push it through a screen. you do not have to stand there and look at it grind.

6-9 $ a lb , 8 hrs at 8$ an hour 64$ 64+9...
Jacks Battle powder is 12.50 per pound delivered by the case.

Obviously if you have nothing else to do, and a lb of powder would last you 100+ rounds then maybe, it could be rationalized to be "cheaper"
But in this case of cannon shooting, a lb is only going to make 16 , maybe 32 rounds.. Not real cost affective.

Shooting round balls over a chronograph my homemade powder is averaging over 1100 fps out of my Pietta Remington 36 and just under 900 fps out of my Euroarms colt 44 with a 4 1/2" barrel.

My cost for components is around $3.00 a pound. I make my own charcoal out of black willow.

As long as you take all the precautions and not be an idiot, you should be fine.

I shoot more now than I ever have since it's not costing me much.

Like I said, you should talk to a PGI member. I am not a member, I'm just one of the guys who have made my own BP.

The PGI has thousands of them, and they can match their homebrews against factory BP anytime.

I'm not a pro by any means, but I used to make my own BP for rockets. It takes some practice to get it right, but the process is pretty simple...and safe, as long as you take proper precautions. I usually made mine in one pound batches.
