Between black coffee, and shiftn' gears
Summer was winding down and the start of another school year gearing up. Summers are too short when you are a kid, and school years are just too long.

“When is the first holiday we don’t have to go to school?” is often one of the first questions a kid will ask.

This day on the range I should have expected something. It is said when a kid is quiet they are up to something.
There is much truth in this adage, one adage not often shared is “When the parents are quiet – they are really up to something”.
Combine kids and parents being quiet and…

Small group of folks, made up mostly of single ladies, some with kids, some parents and grandparents tossed in. Oh, cannot forget the dawgs…

While the adults were getting lessons on various firearm concerns from shotguns to handguns, the kids were a big focus this summer and single shot .22 rifles are just too much fun no matter how big a kid one is.

Being the Adopted Uncle means …umm….well…there is a lot to this being an Adopted Uncle. One must pass forward as passed to them and this includes music of the time you were raise in.

I like a variety of genre from Rock & Roll, Blues, and Country – then again I was raised on Rock & Roll.
So kids get into and like various artists and songs I grew up on. Bob Seger, Jimi Hendrix, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Rolling Stones, Grand Funk Railroad, Who, Guess Who, Three Dog Night….

Seems a certain Dr. Hook song got to be a favorite song; one that got into brains of kids and parents and…

Now we are honest and up front with the kids, they know they can come to us about anything. So we shared about the song, what all is referenced and about the magazine.
Called “parenting” and kids got a right to know, be parented and understand some things about the real world – past or present.

“It’s a neat song and we like it! “
Kids are great for just liking stuff “because” without all the other baggage folks attach. Sure, a few copies of the Rolling Stone were bought and – again, kids are curious and adults are supposed to mentor, educate and guide.

The shooting that day was fun; everyone having safe fun shooting tin cans, water balloons, spinner targets and all. Kids have an adult shooting buddy.

Like I said “I shoulda known”. A certain song stuck in heads and little things like a kid shooting a can for instance a bit further out for the first time and “if I hit it – do I get my picture on the cover of the Rolling Stone? "
Snickers, Chuckles, and “yeah you sure do, and get five copies for your mother…”

Did I mention tie-dyed attire was the fashion of the day? Oh yeah – complete with one mom and daughter each wearing a red tennis shoe on one foot and a yellow one on the other...

Shooting is done, guns all put away, range policed and we were going to “pig out and eat” – this was the moms by the way, that said this, not the kids.

You know that look that says you have just been snookered? Yeah- that one.
“Oh Phooey! Adopted Uncle, do you mind running up to the house and getting the stuff we “forgot” and need for this cookout?”

Hook, line and sinker I went…oh I knew something was up – just ….

I come back and Cover Of The Rolling Stone by Dr Hook is cranked up …
I got kids and moms and dads and grandparents doing a line dance just a singing and carrying on.

“We surprised you huh?” - one of the kids piped up.
I was about to lose it laughing at the two year old trying to do this line dance…

Remember the Polaroid cameras? Oh yeah, that thing taking pictures and being taped to the covers of the Rolling Stone.

Dr. Hook would have been proud of this bunch. The black lab wearing his red bandanna, with his goofy grin looked especially nice on “the cover”

Got kids, moms doing air guitar and
ROCK AND ROLL!
(Aw, that’s just beautiful)
.

Got the dance called the “Funky Chicken” going on by some kids and
I got a freaky old lady name a’ Cocaine Kitty who embroiders onmy jeans.
I got my poor old gray-haired daddy
drivin’ my limousine.

Hey you folks try to open a jar of mustard and flip burgers with this going on and on and the song repeating…
Now there are those that would have folks think, guns are bad, kids have no business being around guns much less owning one and shooting them.

Nope sorry folks, I disagree. Sometimes being a responsible firearm owner means passing forward, having fun , and....
Is the thrill that’ll getcha when you get your picture on thecover of the Rolling Stone.

:D
