11/17/2003 - Man Killed, SWAT Officer Wounded in Neb. Shootout

The Associated Press

WALLACE, Neb. (AP) -- A man was killed and a state trooper was wounded in a shootout Monday at a mobile home outside town.

Bradley Ogier, 42, was shot after he opened fire on members of the patrol's SWAT team as they tried to serve a search warrant at the house at 3 a.m. CST, said Deb Collins, State Patrol spokeswoman.

A SWAT team member was shot in the thigh as he approached the building with other troopers, Collins said. The injury was hospitalized but the injury was not life threatening, she said. The trooper's name was not immediately released.

Ogier and another man were inside the house at the time of the shooting, Collins said. She said it was not immediately known if the other man had also opened fire on the troopers.

After shots were exchanged, the SWAT team immediately removed the injured trooper and maintained a perimeter around the building for three and a half hours. During that time, the other man walked out of the house and told officers that Ogier was injured.

After failing to make contact with Ogier through a bull horn, troopers entered the house at 6:30 a.m. and found him dead, Collins said.

Ogier had been wanted on a series of warrants including possession of a controlled substance, carrying a concealed weapon and failure to appear in court, Collins said.

The SWAT team had been called in to help the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department serve a search warrant on Ogier at the site two miles south of Wallace.

The injured trooper was temporarily treated in North Platte before being transported to a Lincoln hospital, Collins said.

Lincoln County Attorney Jeff Meyer and the North Platte Police Department are leading an investigation into the shooting. State law also requires a grand jury investigation into deaths that occur when someone is in custody or when authorities are trying to take someone into custody.
