Officer Wounded: Suspect Killed Update

(North Platte, NE)-A Nebraska State Patrol trooper is in serious but stable condition at a Lincoln hospital, after being shot during an early morning SWAT call. Sgt Robert Veal a 22 year veteran of the Nebraska State Patrol was shot in the right thigh as he and other members of the Troop D SWAT team, along with Deputies from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department attempted to serve a warrant.
The SWAT team was serving a search warrant shortly before three a.m. Monday morning November 17, 2003 for the arrest of Bradley Ogier DOB (7-31-61). The warrant was served at Ogier’s mobile home located two miles South of Wallace, Nebraska on Anderson Road.
As the SWAT team and members of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s department approached the mobile home shots were fired from inside. Sgt Veal was hit in the right thigh. At that time members of the SWAT team and Sheriff Deputies returned fire. Moments after the exchange of gunfire a second individual came out of the trailer. He is identified as 18 year old Brandon Ogier, the son of the suspect.
The wounded trooper was removed from the scene and transported to a North Platte Hospital. SWAT team members maintained a perimeter around the mobile home and made repeated attempts by voice and bull horn to contact the suspect inside the mobile home. Unable to make contact, officers entered the residence shortly before 6:30 A.M. Monday morning.
Once inside, officers found the suspect Bradley Ogier deceased.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the wounded officer and his family as well as with the family of the deceased,†Said Colonel Tom Nesbitt, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “This is the fourth shooting involving Nebraska State Patrol officers within the past year. It is the second time in the past month a Nebraska Law Enforcement officer has been wounded in the line of duty. Bradley Ogier had an extensive criminal history. It concerns me, when someone with such a criminal background is allowed back on the streets, through the judicial process.â€
Sgt. Veal the trooper wounded at the scene has been transferred to a Lincoln Hospital, where he is listed in serious but stable condition.
Nebraska law requires a Grand Jury be convened any time a person dies while in Police custody or in the process of apprehension. Lincoln County Attorney Jeff Meyer will appoint a special prosecutor. The North Platte Police Department is handling the incident investigation.

Sounds like one bad dude is gone. Apparently he didn't want to go back to jail.

Maybe it's my predeliction for condemning warrants being served by SWAT at 3am, and knowing how piss poor some LEOs can be in the shooting skills department, but I took the title to mean the trooper was hit by friendly fire while serving the warrant.

Glad I was wrong in that supposition.
