Man kills Cow

Few years back we had a out of state guy shoot thought the trees at "color" it was a girl with blond hair sitting in camp on a ice chest. He saw the blond color and thought it was a elks hind end. The lady was hit in the shoulder area and IIRC died as a result.
Anyone that shoots at what they are not 100% sure what it is,,, well I won't tell ya what I think about it. I am not even gonna say what I feel as I would be banned from this forum.

I am not talking a deer walking out where a larger one just walked into I talking shooting movement in the bushes where you saw a deer or maybe deer enter, or think maybe a deer could be, or color or anything else where your not 100% sure it is a critter you are meaning to kill, HUGE difference.

IMHO it is criminal negligence to shoot like that.
No slack for the guy from me.

Guy that shot the cow should pay at least for the cow, a large fine and lose his hunting privileges for several years at least, he has no business in the woods with a gun if this story is true as presented.
Good chance that the guy knew it was a cow and whose cow it was when he shot it. If I don't miss my guess there is more to this story than we will ever know.

I have a couple more rules:

#5 NOTHING is worth shooting a person, or a pet, or taking any risk of same. No trophy, no freezer full of delicious elk, NOTHING. Nothing is worth the risk. Nobody here is starving to death, and needs to risk anyone's wellbeing to get some meat. And furthermore, nothing we are hunting is worth RUINING hunting or a hunting area for the rest of us by scaring the crap out of a hiker or something, even if nobody gets hurt. DO NOT create more anti-hunters with reckless behavior. Let the damn deer go, if you have to.

#6 Assume your bullet will go through and through, then keep going with lethal energy remaining. That was hammered home when I shot right through a North American Bison last week. It was a one-shot kill, too, not a grazing shot or anything. Exit hole was just like the entry hole, so I have to assume that bullet kept on going and could have killed someone or another animal.

Shooting at movement is the bad part. :uhoh: Not so sure about loose livestock on another person property being out of bounds. Especially if the owner hadn't found it in two weeks. If the bovine had wandered onto a roadway and been hit by a mom and her kids in the mini-van would we be yelling for the animal owner's head? Maybe the guy did the community a service, although his technique was very bad.. :scrutiny:

On the cow subject....one of the property owners next to my local hunting club had three scottish highland cows. They got loose for 2 months. They were running up and down the deer runs at the hunting club. really tearing the place up. It sure was odd to find cow hoofprints under my deer stand. We were all asked to shoot the cows if we saw them. The property is bowhunting only, but we were given permission to shoot the cows with a rifle if we saw them. Landowner didn't want someone on the road to hit one of the cows. The state police and DEP couldn't get them so they asked for our help.

After about 2 months, someone was sighting in their deer rifle at the range and saw the cows. He shot two and the third one was chased around for 2 more weeks before it finally got shot.

Those highland cows are amazing, they eat acorns and browse just like a deer. A whole cow got donated to the club and let me tell you, that was the best burger/steaks I've ever eaten. Sort of tasted like a cross between a deer and a cow.

People make mistakes. It is just a fact of life. But, everyone should try to minimize them as best they can.

My outfitter friend in Mt. had a hunter with a dark gray wool coat sitting with his back against a tree, and another hunter mistaking him for a bear shot and killed him.

I'll not make this how smart I am and how dumb the guy who shot the cow is, but a reminder of how careful you really need to be.
